The first Esports Olympics are finally happening in Saudi Arabia, but many gamers are curious whether Fortnite will be included.
The International Olympic Committee has entered a 12-year partnership with Saudi Arabia to host a new series of competitive gaming events. While the final dates and schedule, including games, are yet to be finalized, the Esports event will happen next year. Saudi Arabia recently successfully hosted the Esports World Cup, so the country will have some experience hosting big Esports events. The IOC approved the proposal to inaugurate the Olympic Esports Games on July 23, 2024. The committee has yet to officially release what games will be included in next year’s mega event.
However, fans are excited to know if Fortnite will help ring in the inaugural Esports Olympics.
Fortnite has a slim chance of being at the Olympic Esports event as it contains mild violence and weapons.
The IOC has predetermined standards that the games must follow. One condition is that only non-violent video games be included, so games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Mortal Kombat will likely not be at the event.
The overseeing committee has cleared its stance regarding violent games in the past. It isn’t surprising that Fortnite, a game with plenty of weapons and violence, won’t make the initial cut. That doesn’t mean there’s no chance, though. Despite the violence, the IOC could amend the rules and allow popular competitive games in Olympic Esports.
If Fortnite is included in the Esports Olympics next year, the United States of America would be the country with the best chance of bringing home the gold.
However, Saudi Arabia won’t be far off in the race, as plenty of top-ranked Fortnite players belong to the nation. It won’t be a cakewalk for the Americans, as they’ll face plenty of competition from Saudi Arabia and Korea.
Players like Steven “Ship” Edmonson, Twitch Rapper, and James “DuoKing” Stephenson are top-ranked in global wins and belong to the USA. Fortnite is generally more popular in the North American region, with plenty of gamers logging on to play or watch the game. Like Koreans have a higher chance of securing the top position in League of Legends, the USA has a high chance of getting gold in Fortnite at a potential future Esports Olympics.
