Why is Hololive Raden’s dance meme going viral?

Hololive’s Juufuutei Raden has gone viral on TikTok and YouTube shorts thanks to her meme dance, resulting in a massive boost of subscribers.

So far, Hololive’s ReGLOSS unit has been a success for the company. As a group dedicated to the idol aspect of vtubing, ReGLOSS functions a little bit differently from its Hololive peers. Whereas the rest of Hololive, for the most part, focuses on gaming and variety streams, ReGLOSS focuses on music above all else. Their role is similar to what IRys and Azki do, only as a unit instead of individual performers. Juufutei Raden, the smokey rakugo of the group, proved the wisdom of a musical focus after she recently went viral online.

In a single month, Raden gained 120,000 new subscribers, and gaining more by the day. It’s all thanks to one adorable dance.

What is the origin of the Hololive Raden meme dance?

The Raden meme dance originally came from Juufutei Raden of Hololive ReGLOSS, posted on August 6, 2024.

In the anime community, there are two surefire ways to go viral, especially on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. First, make a catchy earworm of a song, then second, get an adorable anime girl to dance to it. Hololive is no stranger to viral dances reaching audiences who don’t even know the agency. A fan animation by Suzuki Kenta of Subaru dancing with her duck form, set to OutKast’s Hey Ya, was one of the most popular memes of 2021.

Raden did the exact same with her Maitake dance.  Many fans who know Raden fondly call her a cute mushroom, which strangely fits her hairstyle and color palette. Raden reached viewers that Hololive hasn’t reached before, with many comments asking who the “maitake maitake guru guru girl” is from.

The translated lyrics for Hololive Raden’s Maitake Maitake Guru Guru

In Raden’s dance meme lyrics, maitake means mushroom and guru-guru refers to a spinning motion, hence her hands.

The meme starts with Raden shouting “What shall we do with the extra time?” before bursting into song. That’s the entire thing, and yet it has captured the hearts and minds of vtuber fans everywhere. Raden’s Maitake dance short currently has 3.9 million views, making her the most popular member of Hololive ReGLOSS in terms of viewership. Fans hope Raden’s viral moment results in even more love coming Hololive’s way.
