Fortnite players are desperately calling for a nerf to Captain America’s Shield in the most recent season.
Chapter 5 Season 4 is all about Marvel. Called Absolute Doom, it introduced excited fans to a ton of Marvel-themed skins, cosmetics, and weapons. While this theme initially excited the Fortnite community, players can’t help but notice that one addition is completely unbalanced and ruining the game. Captain America’s Shield has two functions, being thrown as a projectile to deal significant damage to players and structures, and blocking incoming damage while sprinting.
While they sound simple, their impact on Fortnite Absolute Doom already has fans begging for a nerf.
Fortnite fans think Captain America’s Shield is OP due to its powerful building damage and lack of clear answers to its damage block.
Captain America’s Shield has been complained about consistently since it came out, with Fortnite players largely expressing that it has no counters. Players can essentially hold up the shield and avoid taking any damage, making it easier for them to move around the map without any trouble. The only current counter players found is War Machine’s Arsenal, but this counterplay still takes a while.
Without any downside, players are holding up the Shield whenever possible. A TikTok recently showed a cybertruck ramming into the shield, causing the player to be pushed back but not experience any damage.
Some players have noticed that whatever team has a Captain America Shield basically wins. The lack of balance has not been enjoyable to Fortnite fans, especially competitive ones. Not only can the shield block all kinds of damage, but it can be thrown repeatedly to destroy enemy builds. The spamming has become frustrating to many players.
“Glad I’m not the only one to realize how stupidly broken the shield is. Every game I play I get killed by some shield turtle spamming the Shield. I literally just got out of my 5th match of the season in which I died from a shield turtle. C’mon, last season it was broken cars, now broken shields? Epic needs to make a balanced loot pool for once,” said one angry fan on Reddit.
Despite being extremely OP, Captain America’s Shield can be found in the usual spots.
There is nothing special involved, meaning it’s easy to get a shield. This makes it feel even more impressive. But players are guessing that Epic will nerf Captain America’s Shield in an upcoming update or even hotfix. Maybe don’t get used to bashing people and destroying buildings just yet.
