Popular vtuber Neuro Sama originally started as an Osu! steamer on Twitch, but their strangely robotic voice and awkward behavior have fans wondering if they’re really a computer or a human in diguise.

Vtubers utilize custom-made avatars to play their role while they stream to fans. Thanks to modern technology, creators can use these virtual avatars to mimic their real-life movements and emotions while never having to step into the spotlight. While most vtubers follow the same basic formula, Neuro Sama stands out because, despite being a vtuber, she’s more than just an avatar.  Neuro Sama got into the vtuber scene by streaming videos on Twitch, primarily of her playing the game Osu! She played Minecraft and Pokemon as well, but the rhythm game Osu! Was how she primarily made a name for herself, even defeating top Osu! player mrekk in a 1v1 match.

Who or what is Neuro Sama vtuber?

Neuro Sama is an AI created and maintained by Vedal, a British programmer who uses her as an avatar of sorts to stream content on Twitch.

Vedal created the artificial intelligence Neuro Sama in 2018 and the AI’s primary function was to play the rhythm game Osu! The original stream in which Vedal introduced Neuro Sama was titled “Neuro-sama – AI learns to play Osu! (and become a VTuber).” In it, Neuro Sama played Osu! and showed her ability to engage with the viewers by answering their questions.

After the first stream, Neuro Sama streamed daily, predominantly focusing on learning to play Osu! In January 2023, Neuro Sama sang for the first time in a stream which turned into a regular occurrence after that point. She was also banned from Twitch for the first time in January 2023 for violating the terms of service. The exact reason for the ban was unknown, however, a channel moderator speculated that some viewers tricked the AI into making controversial statements.

Neuro Sama returned strong after the ban was lifted and her followers have grown exponentially. Neuro Sama has also collaborated with other vtubers such as Miyune and Camila. Arguably her biggest collaboration was with the Hololive member Takanashi Kiara, which helped her make Neuro Sama a household name as a vtuber. In December 2023, Neuro Sama was featured on the top 10 female Twitch streamers list, showcasing just how popular an AI can be.
