Amane Kanata recently took a break for medical reasons, and some fans wonder what the nature of her disease is.
Kanata debuted as part of Hololive Japan’s 4th generation of vtubers in December 2019. Fellow members Tsunomaki Watame, Tokoyami Towa, Kiryu Coco, and Himemori Luna fill out the rest of that legendary generation. Kanata immediately endeared fans with her iconic PowerPoint presentations and Soran Bushi dance. One of her greatest passions is singing, and she often does karaoke streams when not gaming. Whenever Kanata approaches a subscriber milestone, she usually holds a singing endurance stream, such as when she hit one million subscribers in July 2021.
Sadly, Kanata has also struggled with medical issues for a long time, and this often resulted in unexpected hiatuses.
Amane Kanata lives with Meniere’s disease, a disorder that affects her inner ear.
Meniere’s disease is a lifelong condition, as it currently has no known cure. Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, deafness, and loss of balance. Diseases such as COVID-19 can further exacerbate these symptoms, as Kanata experienced during the pandemic. Thankfully, the disease does have many treatments to make it manageable.
Kanata is open about her experience with the disease and has recently taken stricter measures to take care of her health. Activities like using electronic devices and long singing sessions exacerbate these issues, so she goes on a hiatus to give herself time to recover. Even so, she still regularly visits the hospital for assurance. It wasn’t until July 2024 when she publicly confirmed her disease was Meniere’s in a tweet. In the past, she only alluded to it as an ear disorder, though it’s possible she mentioned it off-hand in some stream.
Many of Kanata’s fans have become used to her condition and understand the long gaps between her regular schedule. Given how much worse Meniere’s can get if left untreated, a good rest is never cause for disruption among her fandom. Hololive is no stranger to talents taking long breaks for medical reasons. In May 2024, for example, Ookami Mio went on hiatus for long-term treatment for an unspecified medical emergency.
While talents are always apologetic about these breaks, most fans are always supportive. Amane Kanata’s fans patiently await her return to a regular schedule.
