Independent Japanese vtuber Kawasaki Sui is celebrating one million subscribers on YouTube, but who is she?
Despite not being part of a major talent agency, Sui has managed to carve out a respectable space for herself in the vtuber community. She regularly posts videos once a week in addition to livestreams seemingly every day. She’s a Japanese vtuber who prides herself on her English skills when it comes to conversing over live chat. After barely hitting 80,000 subs back in February 2023, Sui has now finally reached her goal of one million.
Here’s what to know about the latest vtuber to crack one million subs, as well as some questions as to how she got them.
Streaming since 2020, Kawasaki Sui is both a content creator and a consultant for other vtubers.
Sui first debuted in June 2020 as a Japanese receptionist with an ASMR-style voice. She mainly creates free-form chats and gaming content, emphasizing her love for motorsports and mature personality. While not as fantastical as some of the vtubers with Hololive or Nijisanji EN, Kawasaki Sui emphasizes her grounded nature and relatability to her subscribers.
Additionally, the vtuber works with other streamers to run one-on-one counseling sessions, Q&A’s, and more that she then uploads in fragments to her YouTube channel. Sui professes a deep dedication to the vtubing community and seeks to use her years of expertise to help others.
Some vtube fans are wondering if all of Kawasaki Sui’s subs are legitimate given her low view count on YouTube and follower count on X.
Despite reaching one million subs on YouTube, Kawasaki Sui only has 44,000 followers on X and follows 30,000 accounts. Only a select few of her full length YouTube videos or livestreams have over 100k views and are usually below 10,000, with one short hitting 551,000 views and the rest falling off from there. Her most viewed video, an outlier at 6 million views, is her profile. Plus, according to SocialBlade, Sui gained tens of thousands of subscribers every week since around January 2024.
Some Redditors have reported seeing ads for Kawasaki Sui on YouTube and attribute some of the subs to inorganic means. Others mention that a subscriber count of 1 million could make sense if every single view was unique. Ultimately, Sui’s sub count raises more questions than it answers.
Regardless of how she reached one million subscribers, Kawasaki Sui seems to be on the way up. Perhaps her video views will start to better reflect this new milestone.
