Vitality just won the Grand Final for IEM Cologne 2024 in one of the most viewed CS2 events of the year.
Counter-Strike 2 has faced many criticisms, but the esports aspect remained paramount in many people’s minds. As long as CS2 could prove how exciting the game could get at the highest level, many were willing to be patient with Valve. In that regard, CS2 has delivered multiple exciting events that garnered thousands of viewers. Leading the path in 2024’s current hot streak of esports success is the Intel Extreme Masters tour. IEM is one of the longest-running global pro gaming tours worldwide, having debuted in 2006. Since then, IEM has established itself as a mainstay of the professional Counter-Strike scene, and many consider it an unofficial major.
In the cathedral of Counter-Strike, Team Vitality proved its worthiness for one of the game’s most prestigious trophies.
Vitality won 3-1 against Natus Vincere to become IEM Cologne 2024 Champions.
The first game saw Vitality go for a 16-14 win on Nuke against Navi. The latter fired back with a 10-13 win against Vitality on the classic, Dust 2. Mirage saw the most intense game of the match so far, with a brutal 22-20 in Vitality’s favor.
Vitality finally won the match with authority by going 13-9 against Navi on Inferno in the fourth game, ending the grand final. As the best finals tend to go, it was a match between two strong teams that dominated the brackets. Many fans noted Vitality and Navi’s win streak on the Mirage map. It was only fitting for Vitality to end Navi’s streak in a memorably intense game.
IEM Cologne 2024 was a grand success for the CS2 esports scene. Despite not being an official major event, the stream peaked with over 1 million concurrent viewers. The rise in IEM viewership began with IEM Dallas 2024 doubling its peak viewership from 2023. Notably, Vitality was also part of the grand final for that event, but the squad ultimately lost against G2 Esports.
Overall, the future of Counter-Strike 2 esports looks as bright as ever. With four more S-tier events still to come, CS2 esports fans have a lot to be excited about.
