In Valorant, each player needs to take on a specific role in order for the team to succeed. If you want to climb the ranks, it’s important to master at least two of these roles so you can fill what your team needs in a typical ranked game. In this guide, we explain all roles in Valorant and what to expect from each.
The entry fragger is the flashiest role in Valorant, because they start all the action. These players play duelist agents and are responsible for running into bomb sites and finding opening kills for the team. If they are successful in winning the first gunfight, they give the team a 5v4 advantage, which heavily increases the odds of converting the round.
However, duelists shouldn’t just rush into an area dry. They need the team to support them with utility, so the chances of winning that first fight increase. This is why teammates will usually gather information and throw flashbangs to help the duelist succeed.

Still, even if you’re one of the best Valorant players in the world, you cannot simply win every duel in Valorant. Sometimes, you are bound to lose. So, the secondary job of the entry fragger is to create space for the team to get into the site behind them. That way, if you lose the duel, your team will be there to trade you.
If you have a five-stack between your friends and want to determine who should be the duelist, the best option is to pick the player with the best aim. Duelists need to get clean kills and be able to adjust their crosshairs quickly since enemies can appear from anywhere.
Controllers are also known as Smokers in Valorant. People think playing controller is boring, but we’d argue that this is the most important role in a team. Someone is forced to play it because a team composition without a Smoker just doesn’t work.
Smokers are responsible for controlling vision and shaping how fights happen across the map. Smokes are mainly used to delay enemy movements and allow teammates to get inserted into key positions on the map.

To become a successful Smoker, you need to be efficient at multitasking. You need to watch the minimap, deploy smokes for the team, and be ready to shoot back at enemies if they show up. There is a lot of focus required for this role.
It’s also important that smokers do not die early in rounds, especially if there’s only one of them on the team. If your Smoker dies in the first 20 seconds of the round, you are going to play the entire round without any smokes, making it super hard to win. So, playing Controller also means you get a “free pass” to bait your teammates.
Though baiting your teammates sounds fun, this also means Controllers often find themselves the last ones standing in late-round situations. So, if you’re playing Controller, be ready to get thrown into clutch situations and close out rounds for the team.
In Valorant, initiator agents are divided into two categories. The one we’re going to focus on is recon initiators. These are agents that specialize in gathering information for the team.
The best Valorant agents in this category are Sova, Skye, and Fade. If you notice, all three of these agents have abilities they can send in to gather information. Sova has his drone, while Skye and Fade have their dogs and prowlers. Instead of sending in a player, you can send these abilities to take note of where enemies are without offering an unnecessary death.

Recon initiators don’t just help at the start of the round. They are also extremely valuable after the spike is planted. For example, you have definitely seen Sova players being “Lineup Larrys” and shooting Shock Darts at the defuser. Alternatively, Fade also has her Seize, which could make it difficult for defenders to defuse the bomb.
To play Recon well, you need timing, patience, and communication. You have limited abilities every round, so you mustn’t waste them unnecessarily. You must communicate with your teammates before using a key piece of utility and make sure they’re ready to play off it.
Sentinels are notoriously strong on defense, as that is how they are designed. Sentinel agents like Cypher, Killjoy, and Vyse have “setups” that allow them to anchor bomb sites and make it very difficult for enemies to enter freely.
But offense is a different story. Sentinel utility isn’t as useful as the controller or initiator utility when hitting bomb sites. Because of this, sentinels are usually sent out to lurk instead. They typically place a trip to watch out for flanks, then roam around the map on their own. When you’re lurking, the main objective is to gather information and try to surprise the enemy team by cutting off rotations.

Many people think Sentinel is one of the easiest agent roles in Valorant, as you have abilities that help you win gunfights. However, we think it’s the opposite. The most important trait for sentinel players is the ability to play alone.
When you’re on defense, you are usually playing on a bomb site by yourself. On offense, you are lurking and playing far away from the team. This means you won’t have a teammate with you. You can’t expect anyone to trade you or set you up for kills with flashbangs, so you need strong confidence to win 1v1 duels.
There are five players on a Valorant team, but only four main role categories – the math doesn’t add up. That’s where the flex role comes in. The flexible player is there to fill whatever gap a team composition has. These guys pretty much patch any major holes in the lineup.
For example, if your team is lacking flashbangs or blinds, the flex player can select agents like KAY/O or Breach. If you think offense is going to be a problem, going for double duelist will make it easier to take bomb sites.
If you want a great example of a good flex player, we can confidently give Jason “f0rsakeN” Susanto a shout. He is widely considered the best player in this role, as he can play any agent in the game and still carry his team with it.
What makes him, and other flex players, is their adaptability. They understand what the team is lacking and choose agents to plug the holes. So, if you don’t enjoy playing the same agent over and over again, Flex could be a good role to keep you cycling between agents.
