Everything to known about Twitch Channel Points, for streamers and viewers

twitch on phone subscriptions

Streamers who want to add another level of engagement with viewers on their streams need look no further than Twitch Channel Points.

One of the best parts about Twitch is the relationship that streamers can build with their loyal viewers. This can be done through actions as simple as shouting out subs, followers, and donors, to creating special perks for subscribers. In addition to making the audience feel special, some Twitch streamers can even get additional financial benefits provided their viewership is high enough.

One such way to cultivate an audience is through Twitch Channel Points, a system that rewards streamers and viewers alike for interaction. It’s also open to all viewers, not just subscribers, making it a useful tool for established and growing channels alike.

What are Twitch Channel Points?

Twitch Channel Points are a great way for streamers to reward their audience for viewing and interacting with their content, allowing viewers to earn rewards by watching and chatting.

Available to Twitch partner and affiliate streamer accounts, Channel Points let viewers earn some perks that are usually reserved for paying subscribers. These points and perks are automatically enabled for all monetized channels, but can be turned off in the creator dashboard. The rewards can include a default set of rewards, such as unlocking a random sub emote or highlighting a message, or be customized by the streamer.

There are a number of ways for viewers to earn Twitch Channel Points. And while points are available to all viewers, any currency received is multiplied if the user is subscribed to the channel, adding another benefit to subscribing.

Viewers can earn Channel Points through the following methods:

  • Watching streams
  • Joining a raid
  • Following for the first time
  • Hitting a watch streak
  • Cheering for the first time every 30 days
  • Gifting their first subscription every 30 days

Each reward has its own cost that can either be set automatically or customized by the streamer. An important note to keep in mind is that the average viewer earns approximately 180 points per hour. For some prizes, viewers may have to save up quite a few points by watching many hours of a given streamer’s content.

How to set and customize Twitch Channel Points

Streamers have plenty of options when it comes to setting up and customizing their Twitch Channel Points, so long as they know how to go about it.

While Channel Points are enabled, content creators are able to customize almost everything about them, from the title and graphics displayed to the redeemable rewards themselves. Everything can be done through the creator dashboard under the “Channel Points” tab and its various subcategories.

The reward system is currently enabled by default for all monetized users on Twitch. Streamers can simply navigate to “Customize Points Displays” to change the name as well as to set different icons to represent points. In “Manage Rewards,” streamers have the chance to play around with both default and custom reward options. Users can update the price and icons of default rewards, while adding custom rewards that require a little more work on behalf of viewers. Users will have to decide a title and description for these, as well as potential limits in addition to cost and icons.

Channel Points aren’t the only way for Twitch partners to interact with their audience on the platform. They can earn bits from their viewers, and can even send their audience members to raid another content creator’s stream. There are numerous ways to engage with viewers and build one’s channel, and Twitch Channel Points are just one more rewarding part of the equation.
