Announced today via reveal trailer and accompanying blog posts, MEDIEVAL III is reportedly in early development.

Creative Assembly announces Total War: MEDIEVAL III

With a teaser trailer espousing the divine right of medieval monarchs, UK-based Creative Assembly unveiled their upcoming Total War title. The franchise, which is published by SEGA, hasn’t returned to the Medieval timeline for over two decades, with Medieval II: Total War originally releasing in 2006.

Since then, Total War has evolved into a completely different beast. Spearheaded by its hugely popular Total War: Warhammer series, while supported with smaller titles such as Atilla and Pharoah, the Total War franchise has gone through ups and downs.

In an accompanying blog post by Pawel Wojs, the game director for Total War: MEDIEVAL III, we got a hint of what might be coming with the upcoming title:

“Our vision is for MEDIEVAL III to be the definitive Total War sandbox set within the Medieval world and to be the ultimate “What if?” game where you can alter the course of history. We aim to set the scene by immersing you in the historical authenticity you expect from Total War. As you play, the world responds in ways that feel genuinely plausible. You can choose to follow the course as written in the history books or take a bold step towards rewriting it.”

But Wojs also tempered expectations.

“Right now, the game is in early pre-production, so think about it being years away, rather than months, meaning we’re just past the opening stages of its long journey. This phase is about laying the foundations: defining scope, prioritizing features which number in the hundreds at this stage, and shaping how our vision will translate into an unforgettable experience.”

The game seemingly kicks off early in the 12th century, and will cover everything from the Crusades, to the late 14th century. A second blog post highlighted the games aims, stating this is a chance to “rewrite history.”

There’s no solid date for the release of Medieval III, and we’d expect a long development cycle. Given this is being heralded as the rebirth of historical Total War games, we might even expect a new engine or complete overhaul of the existing Total War systems.

Creative Assembly is the developer behind Total War, Alien Isolation, and more. In other Total War news, the company recently revealed a new DLC for Total War: WARHAMMER III, unleashing the undead lord Nagash upon the Mortal Realms.
