Hololive famously doesn’t accept gifts from fans, and a recent incident involving Camila is helping fans understand why.
Social media influencers and celebrities facing privacy issues aren’t a new thing. Vtubers are also not safe from this even though many try to remain anonymous. Nefarious people can find ways to reveal their identities. This is why the popular vtuber agency Hololive announced in 2021 that it has decided to stop accepting gifts. The vtuber agency stated it came to this decision after discussing it with talents. Hololive elaborated that the dangers of privacy being invaded because of the gifts containing “loss prevention tags” were considered. The risk of privacy being violated and vtubers’ identities being doxxed far outweighs the gifts they can receive.
Recently, an independent vtuber Camila faced issues with a stalker and fans wonder whether the unfortunate incident could’ve been avoided if she also didn’t accept gifts like Hololive.
Hololive doesn’t accept gifts from fans since they could contain materials designed to dox talents, which recently happened to indie vtuber Camila.
The introduction of tools such as Apple AirTags has been a lifesaver for many people. They can easily keep track of their belongings like suitcases. However, such convenient and small-sized tools can also be used maliciously. This is why Hololive took preemptive action to ban gifts and protect its talents from potential privacy violations.
This exact situation was faced by an independent vtuber Camila. The vtuber had been dealing with a stalker for months and he randomly showed up at her house one night. Camila tweeted that after her stalker was arrested, he admitted that he concealed a tracking device in a gift he gave the vtuber.
This is how the stalker was able to easily track the vtuber’s location and try to break into her house while she was streaming. Camila advised fellow vtubers to check gifts they receive at conventions to make sure there are no trackers in them.
Furthermore, she stated she will not be going home for some time likely because of safety concerns. Camila’s incident is unfortunate but it highlights an important issue. Vtuber agencies and independent virtual YouTubers might have to stop accepting gifts like Hololive to stay safe from stalkers.
