The MongolZ and Team Falcons find themselves in a surprising spot; fighting for their tournament lives against each other in PGL Bucharest.
While PGL’s latest tournament looked like it was going to be a straightforward affair, things have gone very strangely. Pain Gaming and Team Liquid were both 0-3 eliminations from the tournament. Meanwhile, 3DMAX went 3-0 to earn a playoff spot, while Complexity Gaming won its way to the playoffs with a 3-1 record.
Team Falcons and The MongolZ are some of the “victims” of those upsets. So what’s the betting outlook for this match with both teams against a wall?
The MongolZ and Team Falcons have a 2-2 record in the PGL Bucharest group stage. On April 10, 2025, the two teams will face off to decide who continues in the tournament. The winner advances to the playoffs while the loser is out of the event.
The MongolZ entered PGL Bucharest as the favorite to win, but that changed quickly. The team started its run in Bucharest with a loss to 3DMAXC and was then stunned by Apogee Esports, a team that entered the tournament with an outright winner line set at 151.0. This put The MongolZ into a position where it needed to win out of the group stage to advance forward.
Thankfully for the team, it managed to survive by eliminating Team Liquid and Furia Esports. Now, The MongolZ roster needs to win one more to stay alive in the event:
Over the last six months, The MongolZ has been fearsome on Inferno and Anubis, winning more than 70% of its matches there. However, the team’s most commonly played maps are Mirage and Ancient, where it has a 63% and 59% winrate, respectively. The team is strong everywhere it plays, but it has not played on Train thus far.
The Falcons put together a new roster in January and looked ready to break out with a second-place finish in PGL Cluj-Napoca. An early elimination from ESL Pro League Season 21 and BLAST Open Spring showed the team has a long way to go.
Things went from bad to worse when the team started PGL Bucharest with losses to Complexity Gaming and Team GamerLegion. Team Falcons’ roster is reportedly set for some big changes, but its lineup for PGL Bucharest includes these players:
Falcons has looked strong on Mirage, but is 50-50 on all the other active duty maps. Or at least, the ones it is willing to play on. Falcons has been instabanning Anubis in 2025.
The MongolZ has not played against this particular iteration of Team Falcons. The last time these two teams faced off was in June 2024 at ESL Challenger at DreamHack Summer 2024. While The MongolZ’s roster hasn’t changed during that time, Magisk is the only player left on Falcons from that time.
The MongolZ is a sizable 1.46 favorite against Team Falcons in PGL Bucharest’s group stage. Team Falcons’ moneyline is set at 2.7. The bookies are clearly shaken over the ugly start suffered by either team in this match, but it feels like they’re more worried about The MongolZ when it comes to how this tournament has gone.
The MongolZ will likely defeat Team Falcons in PGL Bucharest 2025. Neither team is playing as well as their fans would’ve hoped, but The MongolZ has still generally looked better against tougher competition, and it has the better body of work. The choice on who to bet on is pretty clear in this case.
