In a jam-packed week for Dota 2, Valve has revealed new details about The International 2024, including the teams that have received a direct invite to TI13 and the full schedule for the open and regional qualifiers.
Fans and players were unsure of how teams would be selected following the end of the Dota Pro Circuit last year. Ultimately, Valve chose to send a small number of direct invites out to teams who have placed in tournaments throughout the first half of this year. The remaining spots are anyone’s game.
It’s a format that harkens back to the olden days of Dota 2 where, for better or worse, there was only vague theorizing regarding which teams would receive a direct invite. Thankfully, the teams that are widely regarded as the most deserving received invitations. Here’s a breakdown of who got the spots and when fans will find out the rest of the competitors.
Team Spirit, Team Falcons, and Gaimin Gladiators are among the teams who received a direct invite to TI13.
Here’s the full list of teams that received direct invites to The International 2024:
All six teams will compete in Copenhagen, Denmark. The group stage and playoffs will take place from September 4-10. There are still 10 open slots which will be filled through qualifiers.
The lineup of invites is notable for the complete lack of South American, North American, or Southeast Asian teams. While organizations like Shopify Rebellion, beastcoast, and nouns haven’t been especially competitive in interregional events, it’s still a break from previous years. Though teams from these regions were often dismissed as benefitting from the DPC that heavily prioritized regional-level play, many of them proved their worth over time, and regularly found their way to top-eight finishes.
The International 2024’s regional qualifiers will run from June 9-23 with two regions playing at a time. Before this, TI13’s open qualifiers will run from June 3 to 8.
Different regions will have different numbers of slots available. The full breakdown stands as follows:
As with last year, a small number of teams will actually play on-stage at the event. Only the top eight teams will play in front of an audience. These eight teams will compete from September 13th to September 15th in Copenhagen’s Royal Arena. Last year’s available prize pool was under $3.4 million a paltry sum next to previous years.
Regardless, fans wanting to travel to Copenhagen to see The International 2024 can mark their calendars with tickets going on sale June 10.
