The first Olympic Esports Games will be in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia Esports Olympics

The International Olympic Committee and National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia announced today that they have partnered to bring the first Olympic Esports Games to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This is the same country that is holding the Esports World Cup in an attempt to become one of the homes of esports as the industry grows. The next step is selecting a city and venue for the Olympic Esports Games. The specific time and title of the event will also be worked on as well as a further discussion of the qualification process for esports participants. The IOC will then have to create a new structure within the overall organization that separates the Olympic Esports Games from the Olympic Games organizationally and financially. There’s a lot to be worked on but it’s still an exciting update for the future of esports as it attempts to appeal to a mainstream audience.

“We are very fortunate to be able to work with the Saudi NOC on the Olympic Esports Games, because it has great – if not unique – expertise in the field of esports with all its stakeholders. The Olympic Esports Games will greatly benefit from this experience,” said IOC President Thomas Bach in a press release.

“By partnering with the Saudi NOC we have also ensured that the Olympic values are respected, in particular, with regard to the game titles on the programme, the promotion of gender equality and engagement with the young audience, which is embracing esports.”

Saudi Arabia Esports Olympics walkoff

The partnership between the IOC and the Saudi NOC will last 12 years. They will be working together to make the first-ever Esports Olympic Games a successful event that combines “Olympic values” while also highlighting the unique qualities and innovation of the esports industry and its community. The committee is seeing this as a “new chapter in Olympic history” that will connect with a new audience and inspire “new dreams and ambitions.”

Esports Olympics further pushes Saudi Arabia as gaming Mecca

Saudi Arabia is hoping to become a “global hub for professional esports,” part of the country’s current plans to reinvent itself through inclusive sports and other entertainment events. The sports participating in the country has tripled since 2015 and the sports federations have tripled, including the creation of the Saudi Esports Federation. There are currently 100 esports pros in Saudi Arabia with gaming as their full-time careers.

According to the Saudi NOC, women’s sports have experienced rapid growth in the country. There are currently over 330,000 registered female athletes and 40 national female teams. The Saudi NOC noted that female and male athletes receive the same level of pay as well.

“Witnessing the growing trends of female participation in esports is very exciting. I had the honor of working towards women’s empowerment in sport and in society as whole under Vision 2030, and the leadership of HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the tremendous positive impact of sport for women and girls. I look forward to the Olympic Esports Games as an opportunity for more female participation from across the globe in a safe and inclusive space,” said Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, IOC member and member of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee as well as President of the Women’s Committee
