Every Dota 2 match has at least one noteworthy moment, and Steam now has a function to record every rampage and solo kill players get.

Dota 2 is a complex game, but that allows for all sorts of highlights to happen throughout a match. Whether it’s a clever outplay in a team fight or a courier snipe holding a Sacred Relic, there are tons of moments worth putting on YouTube. However, recording them is generally a hassle. External programs are cumbersome and keeping OBS open at all times isn’t valid either. Luckily for Dota 2 fans, Valve has added a new feature to Steam to let them record themselves as they play and save only the clips they want.

Here’s how to enable the new Steam record feature in Dota 2 and finally get started on that montage.

How to use Steam to record Dota 2

A new Steam feature lets Dota 2 players record their gameplay live, but the option is not enabled by default.

The new feature, plainly titled Game Recording, uses the Steam overlay to automatically capture gameplay and save it to a gamer’s computer. It can be activated manually every time a player wants to record or set up to run in the background. With the latter option, Steam will record up to two hours of Dota 2 gameplay and save it for the user to comb through later. It also records audio from the game, which is a great feature for players who want to make montages of themselves denying ranged creeps.

Here’s how to join the Steam Game Recording beta and capture clips as you play Dota 2.

  • Open Dota 2
  • Activate the Steam overlay
  • In the bottom right, click the gear icon to open settings
  • Go to the Game Recording section at the bottom
  • Click on the manual or automatic version
  • Restart Dota 2

Once players open up Dota 2 again, the Game Recording feature should be enabled. If a gamer chooses the manual activation mode, they will need to press a hotkey to begin recording., The default hotkey is Ctrl + F11, but this can be changed in the settings.

Steam will automatically store the videos and alert the user once the game is closed. From there, the player can search through the recorded video and pick out any clips that they want to save. Two hours of video can take up quite a bit of space, so be sure to have some hard drive

This feature is also available for Counter-Strike 2, but it will need to be individually enabled for each game.
