There are several reasons a player may want to edit their display name. They could have altered it for the time of year, specialized it for the game they were into, or simply outgrown the username. Fortunately, it isn’t difficult to change one’s username, though some may find that it costs a little more than they were expecting.

How to change a player’s name mainly depends on the main console or system that they play Fortnite on.

How to change Fortnite name through Epic Games

Players who run Fortnite on PC or the Nintendo Switch can easily change their display name in their Epic Games account.

Epic Games has made it easy for a user to change their name with just a few clicks.

• Make sure the connected email address is verified
• Go into Account Settings
• Enter the new display name and click save

Players have the option to change their name through Epic Games as often as once every two weeks, should they choose to do so. This also changes their name in other games on the platform in addition to Fortnite.

Change Fortnite name on console

For those who play Fortnite on their favorite console, they have to go outside of the game or upgrade their account to change their name.

Unfortunately, the process for Fortnite players on PlayStation or Xbox consoles to change their name is a little more complicated. They have two options available to them: upgrading to an Epic Games account, or editing their tag or ID through the platform they play on directly.

Upgrading Epic Games account to change Fortnite name

Players who mainly use Xbox or Playstation to play Fortnite have what are called “nameless accounts.” These are tied to the console and relevant account rather than Epic Games. Upgrading has a number of benefits to players.

• Storing save data separate from the console
• Allowing for two-factor authentication
• The ability to redeem V-bucks cards

To upgrade, players need to go to the official Epic Games site and sign in. From there, they’ll be given the option to sign in using whatever platform they play Fortnite or other games on. Players are then led back to the Epic Games page, where they add a display name and an email that they can verify. Once they receive the emailed code and type it in, they’re all set up with an Epic Games account and can follow the procedures above.

Changing name directly through console

Players who want to change their name in Fortnite without going through Epic Games can do so by changing their handle on Playstation or Xbox. Notably, this will also change their display name across every game tied to that particular account.

On Xbox, users get one free name change and then have to pay $9.99 for every edit after that. To change the gamertag on the Xbox console, follow these steps.

• Select Xbox profile, then go to My Profile
• Select Customize Profile and the current gamertag
• Type the new name and select change if available

• Sign in and go under Settings to Profile
• Select Edit Profile, then Gamertag and Enter New Gamertag
• Enter in the desired, unique name and attempt until the site accepts it

Much like with Xbox, only the first name change is free. After that, PlayStation Plus subscribers have to pay $4.99 for each change and everyone else pays $9.99. PlayStation players, then, should be especially sure they like their name idea before committing.

To change the online ID on the PlayStation website, follow these steps.

• Go to Profile and click Edit Online ID
• Input a new username and select Continue if not rejected
• Confirm purchase if necessary

To change the online ID on the PS5, do this.

• Follow the pathway from Settings -> Users and Accounts -> Account -> Profile -> Online ID
• Enter new online ID and click Confirm if/when available
• Select Order and Pay

Restrictions on account name

While there are plenty of options for a player’s Fortnite name, Epic Games has certain restrictions on what can be used.

Any Fortnite or Epic Games display names need to follow the community guidelines. Xbox and PlayStation have similar naming conventions in place. In summary, none of their new names can include:

• Private personal information
• Direct references to an Epic Games employee, product, character, etc.
• Hate speech, vulgarity, or otherwise offensive language

None of the rules should limit players’ creativity. Additionally, names can be up to 16 characters long on Epic Games and PlayStation, and 12 characters long on Xbox.

Changing one’s name in Fortnite varies in difficulty based on what system they play on. However, most players should have no problem working either with Epic Games or their console account to get the exact handle they want.
