Team Spirit and GamerLegion is one of the key matches at the start of PGL Astana’s group stage, but who will come out on top?
It’s an interesting time for Team Spirit, as the longtime top-ranked team and reigning major winner has arguably slid into being the fourth or even fifth-best team in the world. This isn’t from a lack of strong performances, either.
The team has the chance to flex its muscles in PGL Astana. Though the event has a number of high-level teams, many of the game’s elite passed on competing here. Their journey in the event starts with a match against GamerLegion.
Team Spirit and GamerLegion will face off in the group stage of PGL Astana on May 10, 2025. The match is a best-of-three as part of Counter-Strike’s standard Swiss group stage format. Teams must win three out of five matches to advance to the playoffs.
Team Spirit still looks the part of an elite-level Counter-Strike team, despite falling down the standings a few spots. The squad has placed top-four in every tournament it has played in to this point in 2025, most recently notching a shared third-place finish in BLAST Rivals Spring.
The Spirit roster remains unchanged in this time of big roster shakeups and is making a quick turnaround after BLAST:
Spirit has a winning record across all of Counter-Strike 2’s active duty maps, but it’s not too far from .500 on Mirage and Ancient in 2025. It’s more comfortably positive everywhere else, particularly on Dust 2 where the team is 14-2 to this point in the year.
GamerLegion’s back-to-back playoff runs in PGL Bucharest and IEM Melbourne have boosted the team into fringe top-10 status. Wins over the likes of MOUZ, Falcons, and FaZe Clan hint that the team has what it needs to hang with the cream of Counter-Strike’s crop, but Team Spirit is the biggest challenge GamerLegion has faced yet.
Here is GamerLegion’s roster:
GamerLegion likes to take teams to Inferno, and that’s netted the team wins over Team Falcons and MOUZ. Beyond that, the most notable thing about GamerLegion is its 5-9 record on Nuke in 2025. GamerLegion permabans Dust 2.
The current iteration of GamerLegion has only played Team Spirit once. The outcome was a 2-1 win for Spirit in IEM Katowice 2025. The match was a rough outing for GamerLegion though, winning on Anubis before taking lopsided losses on Ancient and Nuke.
Team Spirit is a huge favorite against GamerLegion in the PGL Astana group stage. The moneylines stand at 1.11 against 6.38, meaning GamerLegion is seen as having little chance of getting the win here.
Team Spirit should be able to take the win over GamerLegion. While there’s an opening there for GamerLegion to keep things competitive, a win is a longshot. Odds are that Team Spirit wins this match with fairly little trouble.
