Stewie2K officially joins Wildcard for PGL Astana qualifier

Wildcard has officially announced that Counter-Strike veteran and star player Jake “Stewie2K” Yip has joined the team’s roster for the PGL Astana 2025 Closed Qualifier.

Stewie2K is an American Counter-Strike player and streamer who is infamous for his aggressive playing style. The legendary player came into the limelight when he helped Cloud9 win the ELEAGUE Boston Major in one of the game’s most memorable moments. That was a significant win for him as he became the first North American player to do so. He then went on to achieve many wins and became one of the most popular Counter-Strike players in the scene.

In 2022, Stewie2K announced he would step away from competitive CS and focus more on streaming content. In 2024, Stewie2K unexpectedly returned to competitive play and replaced Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen during the IEM Dallas for G2 Esports, showing solid if unspectacular form along the way. Stewie2K later announced his potential return to competitive CS2 and the player seems to have found a new team in Wildcard.

Wildcard officially announces Stewie2K joining roster

Wildcard tweeted a teaser featuring the popular CS2 player Stewie2K, which started speculations that he may join the team and now his addition to the roster has officially been announced. 

In March, Stewie2K announced that he would return to competitive CS2 play sometime in 2025. The player didn’t give an exact timeline for his return but his willingness to come back was enough to spark fans’ excitement.  In the same month, Wildcard shared a 10-second teaser that displayed an AK-47 with stickers spelling out “Wildcard Stewie2K” and also featured the player’s signature smoke play.

There were no further details provided and it was unclear why the teaser was posted, but that didn’t stop fans from speculating. With Stewie2K having announced plans to return just a few days before the teaser was published, many fans began to wonder whether he has joined Wildcard.

On March 27, Wildcard tweeted the official announcement of Stewie2K joining the team’s roster. He will be playing for the team in the PGL Astana 2025 closed qualifier. The tweet didn’t offer any more details and it’s unclear what position the CS2 player will play upon his return. It’s also unconfirmed which player Stewie2K is replacing and whether he’ll continue with the team beyond this qualifier.

Fans have already started expressing their excitement at Stewie2K’s return and are predicting that Wildcard will see some great results with him on board. Time will tell whether Stewie2K stays with Wildcard, but for now fans are just content that he’s back.
