OnlyFangs was forced to end a dungeon raid because of DDoS attacks targeting WoW servers, and now Thomas Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris has announced the end of the streamer guild.
OnlyFangs is one of the most popular WoW guilds in the game’s history and that’s in no small part due to the dynamic streamers that are a part of it. From drama that creates engagement to kicking members like Jason “PirateSoftware” Thor Hall, the guild keeps fans waiting for what’s coming next.
On March 23, OnlyFangs was forced to end a raid of the Blackwing Lair dungeon after multiple WoW DDoS attacks. Sodapoppin expressed his disappointment at having to end the BWL raid but promised to return the next day. That’s now set to change as the guild leader has now announced the end of OnlyFangs.
Guild leader Sodapoppin announced that, because of concerns that another DDoS attack may target OnlyFangs raids, he has decided it’s better to end the WoW hardcore guild now.
Soda claimed that the DDoS attacks were planned to affect OnlyFangs. The unexpected DDoS attacks caused many guild members’ characters to die unexpectedly. The guild leader stated he had requested a rollback from WoW developer Blizzard, but that it’s unlikely to come through. He went on to say that he can’t continue to ask guild members to raid when there is a chance that another DDoS attack will occur. The WoW player announced that because of this, the OnlyFangs guild is now over.
Sodapoppin also said that members whose characters remain alive are free to join other guilds or to continue raiding with each other without the formal OnlyFangs structure. He elaborated that it’s unlikely DDoS attacks will target those who aren’t as much in the spotlight, meaning players may be able to continue on now that the broader guild is coming to an end. The OnlyFangs guild leader ended the post by thanking fans for their support.
Soda did offer a chance for the guild to continue, but only if rollback is announced or other significant measures are put in place to protect against DDoS attacks.
Fans have expressed their sadness at the guild’s end but stated they understand why the decision was taken. Many expressed disappointment at the unknown attackers who have caused a great loss for the WoW hardcore community.
The community has echoed Soda’s statement and asked Blizzard to add preventive measures or to allow rollbacks in such scenarios. They claim anyone can use DDoS attacks to cause harm to the group they want. It’s a sad day for WoW as the community to lose a guild that brought so much to the scene.
