League of Legends is an eldritch void that consumes player hours like candy, but how much time do players actually waste on the infamous MOBA?
For perfectly valid reasons, League of Legends has developed a reputation as a massive time sink. While every video game has the potential to waste people’s time, League of Legends just generally takes a lot of time to learn and even more time to get good at. Determining the exact amount of time spent on the game can easily be done through third-party sites and activity tracking apps. Even a casual League of Legends session will last an hour or two, especially with long queues. People who want to get better at the game will go for even longer. Serious players must spend dozens of hours to get good with a single champion. On top of that, they have to do so with randoms, as it’s not like friends will always be available for games.
As early as 2012, when the game only had 12 million players, Riot logged over one billion hours of cumulative playtime. For context, a billion hours is approximately 114,155 years. With over 145 million players in 2024, that number would look downright minuscule. With that in mind, it’s time for League of Legends players to learn how much of that wasted time belonged to you.
There are multiple ways to check how many hours you’ve wasted in League of Legends, but none can show the total lifetime hours.
The simplest and most popular way to check how much time you’ve wasted on League of Legends is by using the wol.gg website (Wasted on LoL). Simply set the search bar to your region, then input your League of Legends tag. The website will then display the hours a player has spent on League of Legends, or more accurately an estimate, while also giving some insight into the approximate number of games you’ve played.
After you enter your information, the site calculates your total time spent playing both League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. It presents your playtime in minutes, hours, and days, while also comparing your stats to other players in your region.
For added perspective, Wasted On LoL provides some alternatives to your hours spent gaming. It quantifies your playtime in terms of books you could have read, movies you could have watched, and even the distance you could have walked. This feature offers a glimpse into how you’ve allocated your time, and how you might have alternatively spent it if you weren’t quite so busy playing League of Legends.
The official League of Legends client, developed by Riot Games, offers a convenient way to check your gameplay statistics including the time you’ve spent playing the game, though an exact number of hours may need to be approximated. While this method primarily focuses on the current season’s ranked hours and match count, it provides a quick snapshot of your recent activity. Here’s how to access this information:
The client displays your total games played and time invested this season. Although limited to the current season’s data, you can also review your 2022 history for a broader perspective. Additionally, the client breaks down your KDA (Kills/Deaths/Assists) ratio, allowing you to gauge your performance over recent months.
While the client’s statistics may not offer a comprehensive overview of your entire League of Legends journey, they serve as a valuable tool for tracking your progress and identifying areas for improvement in your current gameplay.
Interestingly, rewind.lol also does the same thing, albeit limited to the last two years. Still, a year or two of data should be enough to paint a picture of your playing habits. Not to mention, the site displays far more information and fun facts about your playstyle than wol.gg. Regardless, both sites are a good baseline to see how much you may have spent on the time-consuming abyss that is League of Legends.
If players feel concerned about how much time they’ve wasted on League of Legends, they’re probably not alone. Gamers both casual and competitive have spent countless lifetimes grinding out the game. With the upcoming patches and 2024 LCS Summer Split, they probably won’t stop playing League of Legends anytime soon. This also includes time spent on Teamfight Tactics, as Riot Games continues to expand its gaming ecosystem.
