Riot has lifted the curtain on the VCT Path to Champions, a new system that gives Challenger teams a direct shot at qualifying for Valorant Champions, making the road to the game’s biggest stage more open than ever.
Global head of Valorant esports Leo Faria has promised an esports era that is “more open with more events,” starting with VCT Path to Champions. In a brief video, Faria explained a new system that would make it simpler for Challengers and even regular Valorant players to have a greater shot at qualifying for Champions.
Here’s how the VCT roadmap looks for challenger teams worldwide:

Path to Champions will replace Ascension for its challenger teams, a Riot product that existed as an indirect pipeline to Champions. Previously, teams competed in their regional challenger leagues to advance to the Ascension tournament. Sides would then compete to earn promotion to their region’s international league for a period of two years, during which they would compete against official partnered teams.
The strict separation between the partnered international leagues and the Ascension circuit made it very difficult for teams starting beneath the game’s top tier to actually reach Champions within a single year, even if they performed quite well. Riot has now opened up the circuit to simplify the qualification pipeline.

According to Riot, each international league will send four challenger teams to its stage 2 playoffs. For the first time, challenger teams that qualify will receive travel stipends, earn points across stages, and compete alongside partnered rosters for a direct shot at reaching the annual year-end Valorant Champions tournament.
This change simplifies the path not just for established regional teams, but also for aspiring pro players in Valorant’s premier queues. Players and teams who rank high enough in Premier’s invite division can challenge existing teams for a spot in their region’s Challenger League, which ultimately leads to VCT Champions. It’s a full ladder that connects ranked players to professional competition, offering a genuine path from in-game success to Valorant’s largest stage.
The new VCT format brings several other major changes that redefine the circuit. Riot confirmed that Masters events will expand, while stage 2 playoffs across all regions will now serve as “destination events,” adding more opportunities for fans to see their favorite teams compete at the game’s highest levels.
