At long last, Valorant is rolling out the long-awaited ranked rollback feature, but how can players actually use it to get their RR back?
Playing against hackers can be one of the most frustrating experiences in video games. It’s a pointless effort at the best of times, as there’s no matching the advantage given by wallhacks or aimbots. What’s worse is that the games themselves actively punish players who quit, meaning everyone is forced to play the match to its conclusion.
The real kicker has always been the lasting impact that players experience from playing against hackers; losing their RR. Thankfully, Riot Games has fixed that to some degree in Valorant with the introduction of ranked rollback. Here’s how it works.
Valorant patch 10.05 introduced ranked rollback, which allows players to get their RR back if they previously lost to a confirmed cheater. The feature was the highlight of a “small but mighty” patch that also included bug fixes to several characters including Iso, Sage, and Raze.
The process is straightforward, though players have to take active steps in order to get their RR back. Riot Games broke down the step-by-step process.
Players need to continue playing competitive matches in order to get an RR refund after losing to a cheater.
Following the loss, players will receive an in-game notification whenever they are eligible for an RR refund. After receiving this notification, players need to play another competitive match. After completing the match, players’ new RR total will be shown on the end of game screen. The new RR total will reflect the adjustment following the refund.
This is a major expansion of an existing RR refund system that was rolled out in 2024.
Naturally, this change was given a warm welcome by Valorant players. Though studies show that Vanguard is one of the better anti-cheat engines in online gaming, there’s still no shortage of cheaters. Players being able to get something back for losing to a cheater is a relief to many, even if they still wasted their time on the initial match.
There are some key restrictions when it comes to Valorant’s RR refund system.
First and foremost, RR refunds are exclusively available for players who lost against confirmed cheaters, not suspected cheaters. Not every cheater is caught in Valorant, even if they are obviously using aimbots or wallhacks. Even if a player is reported en masse, it doesn’t guarantee that an RR refund will become available.
Another key detail is that RR refunds are only available during the season in which the match was played. As such, players shouldn’t expect an RR refund for a loss they suffered in 2022.
Finally, players are only eligible for a certain number of RR refunds each season. An exact number was not specified. It’s unclear why Riot Games isn’t willing to give RR back for all losses. Ideally, players won’t be encountering so many hackers that they hit the limit.
