There are already quite a few, but get ready for another new Fortnite mode. What began as Save the World eventually added a Battle Royale mode, which then exploded into Zero Build, Festival, Rocket Racing, LEGO, Blitz Royale, and Creative. Now, according to the latest info, a brand-new mode is coming soon and will add a totally unique wrinkle to the battle royale formula.
Proximity chat has been a big part of gaming lately, with some games opting to remove it to prevent players from being toxic. Fortnite, however, is adding a new mode where proximity chat is the crux of the entire thing. It’s just standard gameplay, but you’re able to use the chat to team up with and potentially betray your squad.
According to HYPEX, the synopsis for the mode reads, “Betrayal will make or break your chance at a Victory Royale! Use proximity chat to forge alliances on the fly, or break them just as fast. This mode uses proximity voice chat to help you squad up with nearby players.”

What this boils down to is the ability to change your team layout on the fly. There’s not a ton of information on the game mode just yet, but it will likely start out as solo with the option to add players, thereby making “teaming” a central conceit of the Fortnite mode. It’s unclear if they will actually become part of the team on the screen or just via in-game communication.
Either way, players will now have a whole new strategic layer to consider. Instead of having a set team, they can try to talk their way into a powerful partnership. They can also try to manipulate other players into helping them, only to eliminate them later. There’s a whole new way to play, and it’s almost like a merge between Fortnite and Among Us.
Unfortunately, we do not know when this mode is coming out. No date was given other than “soon.” With the incoming Chapter 7, it’s likely going to be added then. Epic Games introduced several new modes between Chapters 4 and 5, so it would make sense to use that downtime for a new mode again.
