How are MOBAs played?

Playing a MOBA is like participating in a team sport, but within an action-packed virtual environment. Here’s a simple summary of how it works: Imagine a football match, but instead of human players on a pitch, each player controls a character with powers on a map with heavily protected “goals.” The objective is the same: to outplay your opponents as a team until you reach the ‘goal’ (the enemy base). So, basically:

Each player selects a hero or champion with unique abilities, much like choosing your position in a match: forward, defender, or goalkeeper.
The stage usually has three lanes (top, mid, and bot) and an area called the jungle. Teams divide up to cover them and prevent the opponent from advancing.
Every so often, small automatic soldiers appear and advance along the lanes. By defeating them, you earn gold and experience to improve your character.
With gold, you buy items that make your hero stronger. With experience, you level up and unlock or improve skills.
The goal is to reach the enemy base and destroy their main structure (called the Nexus in League of Legends and the Ancient in Dota). The team that achieves this first wins the game.

Analysing performance in a MOBA is not so different from reviewing how your favourite team played after a match: it’s not enough to see whether you won or lost, but to understand what you did well and where you can improve. Here are the key points:

Personal statistics

KDA, CS, and Damage statistics have a tell:

KDA (Kills, Deaths, Assists): measures your impact in fights. A high KDA usually indicates good participation.
CS (Creep Score): how many minions you eliminated. This reflects your ability to farm gold.
Damage dealt and received: shows whether you fulfilled your role (damage, resistance, or support).

Contribution to the team

Secured objectives like towers, dragons, barons, or similar in each MOBA. Participation in group fights and map vision and control are top priorities in games such as LoL or Dota.

Technical aspects

Learn a few champions/heroes and play with them until you feel comfortable. Changing all the time will only slow down your progress.
Learn to farm (or play support), having good CS is more important than looking for kills early on.
Check the mini-map every few seconds to prevent unnecessary deaths.
Be flexible, you won’t always be able to play the role you want; learning at least two positions will give you an advantage.
