All Marvel Rivals characters guide: Every Hero and role

Each Marvel Rivals hero brings their own skills and powers. That means the game feels familiar but also different because of how roles are designed. Ahsan, who climbed Bronze to Diamond mostly playing tank, explains the hero categories and roles in the game.

If there’s one multiplayer shooter game that has made a big wave in the gaming space lately, it is Marvel Rivals. The free-to-play hero shooter caught attention very quickly and became one of the most played titles around the world. What makes it so unique is the way players fight using heroes they already know from Marvel comics and movies.  In this article, we are going through all Marvel Rivals characters and explaining their role in battle.

Marvel Rivals characters categories explained

Inside Marvel Rivals Roster, each hero belongs in one role. These roles decide what their main task is during fights. It is important to understand that players can switch heroes after being defeated, so no match stays the same from start to finish. Cosmetics like skins exist too, but they don’t change abilities, only looks. There are three roles overall:

  • Vanguards: The tank heroes with a big health pool, blocking and protecting while pushing the frontline.
  • Duelists: Damage focused, quick moving fighters who try to eliminate enemies fast.
  • Strategists: Supportive role, helping teammates with healing, buffs, or control effects.

This structure makes the Marvel Rivals character list versatile, and players can adjust strategies as battles go on.

Tank Heroes (Vanguards): The ones who actually win games

Look, I know everyone wants to play DPS, but trust me on this – tanks win games in Marvel Rivals. I’ve climbed from Bronze to Diamond mostly playing these guys, and once you understand how crucial they are, you’ll never look back. As you start climbing ranks in Marvel Rivals, you understand they are the most critical heroes of the bunch. Here’s every Vanguard hero in the game.

  • Doctor Strange is probably my favorite tank right now. Yes, he’s got that whole mystic arts thing going on, but what really matters is how his portals can completely mess with enemy positioning. I’ve won so many fights just by teleporting enemies into bad spots. His shields are solid too – you can literally make enemy projectiles disappear. Only downside is he takes some getting used to. Don’t expect to master him in your first few games.

  • Hulk – okay, this one is pretty obvious. Big green guy smashes things. But here’s the thing everyone misses about Hulk: he’s not just about running in blindly. Sure, his leap ability is great for initiating, but the real skill is knowing when to use it. I see too many Hulk players just jumping into 1v6 situations and wondering why they die. Use your durability smartly and you’ll dominate.
  • Groot is underrated. Players see the tree guy and think he’s boring, but his area control is genuinely broken in the right hands. His healing over time means you can stay in fights forever, and those root abilities? Game changers in tight spaces. Plus he’s got this steady, reliable feel that newer players really benefit from.
  • Peni Parker is weird but in a good way. The mech suits give you that classic tank durability, but you’re also putting out decent damage with the energy weapons. She’s like if D.Va from Overwatch actually felt balanced. Great for people who get bored just holding shields all day.
  • Magneto is interesting. Metal manipulation sounds cool on paper, but in practice it’s all about battlefield awareness. You need to know when you should create cover. High skill ceiling but incredibly rewarding once you figure him out. Definitely not a beginner tank though.
  • Venom is pure aggression and many love it. His symbiote tentacles can drag enemies exactly where you want them, then you just pound them into the ground. It’s messy, it’s brutal, and it works. Perfect if you’re tired of playing passive tanks and want to actually hunt down enemies.
  • Thor brings the thunder and feels appropriately godlike. His hammer throws have crazy range and the lightning abilities can clear entire points. Only issue is he can feel a bit clunky sometimes – the animations are long and enemies can punish you if you’re not careful with timing.
  • Captain America is the definition of a team player. His shield blocking is solid, but those team buffs are what really make him special. When Cap’s around, everyone fights better. He’s not flashy but he’s incredibly effective whether it’s anchoring or disrupting the backline.
  • The Thing is probably the most straightforward tank in the game. Rock skin absorbs damage, punches hurt enemies. His secondary attack has an insane hitbox, and can take out even the smallest targets and flyers without pinpoint aim.
  • Emma Frost is honestly one of the most interesting additions to the roster. Her diamond form transformation is visually stunning and provides incredible damage resistance, but it’s her telepathic abilities that really set her apart. She can mind control enemies with her ult, which creates some absolutely wild plays when timed correctly. I’ve seen Emma players turn entire team fights around by taking control of the enemy tank and walking them off cliffs. Her psychic attacks hit surprisingly hard too, and the range is better than you’d expect. The learning curve isn’t too steep, but mastering when to use diamond form versus staying mobile takes practice.

Support Heroes (Strategists): Actually fun to play, sometimes

I’ll be honest – I used to hate playing support in other games. But Marvel Rivals actually makes it engaging. These characters have real impact beyond just healing.

  • Jeff the Land Shark is absolutely ridiculous and I mean that in the best way possible. This little guy brings so much utility while looking completely harmless. I’ve seen entire enemy teams underestimate Jeff players and get completely destroyed. Plus he’s just fun – sometimes that matters.

  • Luna Snow combines healing with actual damage potential, which is refreshing. Her ice abilities can lock down dangerous enemies while keeping your team healthy. The K-pop aesthetic is either something you love or hate, but mechanically she’s solid. Good entry point for new support players.
  • Loki is for people who think they’re clever (and sometimes actually are). His illusions can completely confuse enemy teams if used right, but there’s a learning curve. I’ve seen amazing Loki players completely take over games, and I’ve seen terrible ones accomplish literally nothing. High risk, high reward.
  • Rocket Raccoon brings that engineering gameplay some people absolutely love. Setting up turrets, placing traps (Team-Up bonus with Peni Parker), controlling territory – it’s like playing a mini RTS inside your shooter. Not for everyone, but if you like that technical approach, Rocket’s your guy.
  • Mantis does the offensive healers play really well. Great mobility and deal DPS level damage if you have good aim. Her ability to temporarily shut down dangerous enemies has saved my team countless times. The healing’s decent too. She’s reliable without being boring, which is a good balance for support.
  • Adam Warlock scales really well into longer games. He is also an offensive healer and works great in a team-comp of 3 healers. If you like supports who can actually carry late game, Adam’s worth learning.
  • Cloak & Dagger – okay, this one is easy to approach yet hard to master. Healing doesn’t really require much aiming just having the cooldowns in mind and using them effectively. Moreover, with two heroes in one, playing them well requires coordinating two different ability sets, which sounds complicated but actually creates some incredible combo opportunities. Definitely not for casual players in higher ranks, but skilled duos can do insane things.
  • Invisible Woman gives you that sneaky support playstyle. Her force fields protect allies while her invisibility lets you make big stealth plays like throwing enemies off the map. She’s flexible in ways most supports aren’t, which keeps things interesting.
  • Ultron brings this terrifying robot overlord energy that actually translates well into gameplay. His mechanical body gives him solid durability for a damage dealer, and his energy beam attacks can melt enemies from across the map. His ultimate ability where he goes full apocalypse mode is genuinely intimidating and can clear entire objective points. He feels appropriately menacing, and sometimes a bit too much considering he’s a support.

Damage Heroes (Duelists): Where the fun really happens

Let’s be real – this is why most people play the game. Marvel Rivals has 18 different damage dealers right now, and honestly, most of them are pretty well balanced. Currently, there’s an abundance of Duelist heroes in Marvel Rivals and we have seen at least one duelist hero getting added with each Marvel Rivals Seasonal patch so far. They don’t live long under fire, but if controlled well, they decide the outcome of fights. Here’s my take on all of them:

  • Iron Man is the aerial superiority fantasy done right. Flying around the map raining down rockets and lasers feels exactly as satisfying as it should. His mobility keeps you safe while his damage output can be genuinely scary. Only complaint is he can feel a bit repetitive after extended play sessions.

  • Spider-Man has this incredibly high skill ceiling that keeps pulling me back. Web-swinging around the map feels amazing, and when you nail those combo sequences, enemies just disappear. But man, it takes practice. I probably died 50 times learning his movement patterns.
  • Namor brings something different with the water manipulation. His trident combat is solid for ranged attacks, but his ultimate can completely reposition entire enemy teams. Great for players who want their damage dealer to have some serious crowd control impact.
  • Black Panther strikes a nice balance between offense and defense. The Vibranium suit gives you just enough survivability to make aggressive plays without feeling suicidal. His claws hit hard and his mobility is decent. Solid all-around choice.
  • Magik is pure high-risk, high-reward gameplay. Her teleportation abilities mean you can appear anywhere and delete enemies instantly, but if you mess up your timing, you’re dead. Not forgiving at all, but incredibly satisfying when played well.
  • Storm feels appropriately powerful with all that weather manipulation powers. Lightning strikes, wind gusts, she can control entire areas of the map with sheer damage output. The area-of-effect (ultimate) damage is legitimately scary when enemies group up.
  • Star-Lord keeps you moving constantly, which I actually really enjoy. His blasters are reliable and those jet boots mean you’re never stuck in bad positions. He doesn’t have the highest damage output, but consistency matters in ranked games.
  • The Punisher is for people who prefer realistic weapons over superpowers. His guns hit hard and his explosives can clear rooms, but it’s all about aim and positioning. If you come from traditional FPS games, Frank Castle will feel familiar.
  • Scarlet Witch can absolutely destroy entire teams when played correctly. Her chaos magic abilities have insane damage potential, but the timing requirements are brutal. Miss your spells and you’re completely vulnerable. High skill, high reward.
  • Hela brings this overwhelming pressure that few enemies can deal with. Her ranged attacks can create chaos from any range and she is practically invincible while casting her ult, which almost no other character has.
  • Psylocke combines mobility with lethal melee combat. Her psychic blades are devastating up close and she’s nearly impossible to pin down. Requires good positioning sense but pays off with incredible kill potential.
  • Moon Knight mixes stealth with brutal combat in interesting ways. His divine empowerment abilities feel unique, and the character design is just cool. Good balance of sneaky plays and direct confrontation.
  • Hawkeye proves that sometimes simple concepts work best. Different arrow types give you versatility, but success comes down to pure aim. If you can hit your shots consistently, Hawkeye’s incredibly effective.
  • Squirrel Girl uses humor and unconventional tactics that somehow actually work. Her squirrel army creates this chaotic battlefield control that confuses enemies. She’s weird but genuinely effective in the right hands.
  • Iron Fist rewards players who take time to learn his combo system. His Chi-powered martial arts can dominate close quarters, but you need to master the timing. Feels incredibly satisfying when you get it right.
  • Black Widow brings that classic assassin playstyle. Stealth, gadgets, precision eliminations – she’s all about hitting the right target at the right moment. Perfect for tactical players who prefer calculated kills over spray-and-pray.
  • Wolverine lets you play more aggressively than most damage dealers thanks to his healing factor. Logan’s claws are lethal and his survivability means you can take risks other characters can’t. Simple but effective.
  • Mister Fantastic has these weird stretching mechanics that can surprise enemies who aren’t used to fighting him. Reed Richards brings unique range and control options that keep fights interesting.
  • Human Torch delivers explosive area damage with great mobility. Johnny Storm can clear groups quickly but becomes vulnerable when focused. Perfect for making big plays in team fights.
  • Phoenix is the definition of high-risk, high-reward gameplay, and I mean that more than any other character. Her fire-based abilities deal absolutely insane damage – like, delete-entire-teams level of destruction. And the crowd control impact her ultimate brings can easily cut off the lifeline between enemies’ tanks and backline.
  • Blade works well at multiple ranges with his hybrid sword and gun combat. The vampire hunter theme adds personality, and mechanically he’s adaptable to different situations.

My advice on playing Marvel Rivals heroes

After spending way too many hours with this game, I can say the character diversity is genuinely impressive. Yes, some heroes are stronger than others (looking at you, Scarlet Witch), but almost everything feels viable if played correctly. The constant updates keep things fresh too. NetEase seems committed to regularly adding new characters, which means the meta never gets stale. Sometimes that’s frustrating when your main gets nerfed, but overall it keeps the game interesting.

My biggest advice? Don’t just stick to one role. I know it’s tempting to only play damage dealers, but understanding how tanks and supports work makes you better at everything. Plus, queue times are way shorter when you’re flexible. Also, now that you know all the different characters in the game, here’s my recommendations of best Marvel Rivals crosshairs for each hero to maximize your impact in game.
