It may be early in the year, but if you’re a Madden-head, you’re already looking ahead to the next entry, Madden NFL 27, which means it’s time to start speculating about one of the franchise’s annual traditions: The cover athlete.
The yearly football release from EA Sports usually highlights one of the National Football League’s biggest stars, celebrating their impact on the league, their team, and football culture as a whole. But who will get the honor this time?
According to traders on prediction market Kalshi, the race for the Madden 27 cover is still wide open, with several players near the top of the market. But there’s one clear favorite: Caleb Williams. Chicago Bear QB and playoff contender, Caleb Williams had an incredible 2025-2026 season and is primed to be a star. But are the Kalshi predictors right?
Before we dive into the options, it’s important to define what the cover athlete actually means. Unlike some other sports franchises, Madden typically features one primary cover athlete for the base version of the game. While special editions occasionally feature alternate art or legends, the main marketing push centers around a single current NFL star.

For the Kalshi market “Who will be on the cover of Madden NFL 27?” the resolution criteria is straightforward: if the selected player is announced as the cover athlete with no specified deadline, the market resolves to Yes. The outcome is verified through official announcements or media confirmation.
With that established, the market currently features several contenders. At the time of writing, Caleb Williams sits near the top of the market with roughly a 75% Yes vote, followed by Jaxon Smith-Njigba much further down at 27% Yes.
They’re trailed by a group of other notable NFL stars. Here’s the current list of players with a Yes vote percentage in the market:
Predicting the Madden cover athlete is always tricky, but we can look at recent trends for clues. EA Sports tends to favor players who either had a huge season the year before or represent the next generation of NFL superstars. Quarterbacks are historically common selections, though standout players at other positions occasionally break through.
With that in mind, picks like Drake Maye or Caleb Williams could make sense if EA wants to highlight the league’s rising stars at QB.

However, Jaxon Smith-Njigba currently leading the market is also understandable. If a wide receiver dominates the season statistically and becomes one of the league’s most exciting players, EA might choose to spotlight that breakout moment. For Madden 26, Saquon Barkley was selected, likely thanks to his iconic hurdle in the 2024-2025 season.
Meanwhile, a veteran pick like Matthew Stafford could happen if the narrative of the season centers around a major comeback or MVP-level performance. Unfortunately for Defensive players, they rarely make Madden cover athletes.
Still, it’s often not the most obvious player who gets picked for the cover athlete. Take Madden NFL 12’s cover athlete Peyton Hillis, although back then, the Madden cover athlete was voted on by the public.
The cover athlete for Madden is typically announced in late spring or early summer, with the game itself releasing around August. With a market value of around $176,122, and the majority of that sitting in the Caleb Williams prediction, there’s good opportunity to either undercut
For now, we’d look at either shorting Caleb Williams with a no vote, or picking Jaxon Smith-Njigba. With these picks you could end up making money guessing the face of Madden NFL 27.
