The first leg of Crownfall is coming to a close in Dota 2, but even hardcore grinders are missing content thanks to a mysteriously absent candle token.
The final node on the pixel art map is blocked, with no way to access it. For completionists and those with latent OCD, that vacationing candlemaker has been a source of frustration for weeks now. They’re definitely going to return, though.
The candle token will be obtainable in Dota 2. Here’s what’s known about it, when it might come out, and how all of this will work.
There is currently no way to get the candle token in Crownfall. Valve will likely add it in the next update.
The candle token appears to be available from the candlemaker’s shop. However, the special node displays a short conversation explaining that the store is indefinitely closed. Skywrath Mage and Vengeful Spirit find a sign that says to come back later. As far as players can tell, there’s no workaround or special trigger. The token simply isn’t available.
There’s no question that it will become available at some point. Valve confirms its absence with the progress bar. Players who load into a match with 52 of 53 progress will have a glowing Crownfall symbol next to their name, indicating they’ve completed the first chapter.
The candle token will likely become available in a future Crownfall update, according to hints from the Candlemaker’s Shop node.
In the visual novel segment, Venge and Skywrath read a sign that claims the shopkeeper will be back. This is likely Valve winking at players about its absence. It also implies that the candle token will become available in a future Crownfall update. Considering that the next major update is scheduled for mid-May, it could come out in a matter of weeks.
As for what the candle hides, there are a few hints on the world map. The candle token unlocks the final special node for the first part of Crownfall, a hidden passage that starts in a tree trunk. This could hint at the return of the Underhollow battle royale, which took place in an underground maze. The same is true for the fan-favorite Aghanim’s Labyrinth.
One strike against this theory is that it would require players to progress through Crownfall to unlock the mode, and the candle token won’t be easy to get from a fresh start. Expect Valve to reveal more as the event progresses.
