LEC 2025 sets its stage for Madrid, and fans are eager to know the details.
The LEC has undergone several changes throughout the 2020s. Fans were once worried about the organization’s status after teams abandoned LEC academies in droves in 2022. That same year, the LEC also had its lowest viewership in years.
These issues may have contributed to LEC’s format shakeups in 2023. While the organization still had some struggles in the following years, it experienced a resurgence of viewers. With the positive results of these shakeups, the LEC just announced an exciting development for 2025.
LEC will take place in Madrid, Spain, in April 2025. The LEC will be in Madrid for the Spring 2025 season. The announcement came courtesy of Movistar KO, one of the most popular esports clubs in Spain. The organization has collaborated with the MAD Lions to participate in LoL esports events.
Traditionally, LEC has taken place in locations such as Berlin, Paris, and London. Fans from other parts of the EMEA region have always felt left out by the LEC for these decisions. With the shift to Madrid, fans were excited to see a new location for the event. Fans immediately hoped for other European places, such as Milan and Barcelona.
The new location fittingly coincides with the major restructuring of LoL esports in 2025. Riot will merge multiple competitive regions, such as North America, Latin America, and Brazil. A new top-tier league also makes its debut for the Asia Pacific region, with its own unique structure.
Most exciting for fans, a third international event will join the ranks of the MSI and Worlds. The event will kick off the 2025 season, taking place from January to March. With the new split structure, slot changes, and reduction of Tier 1 teams, 2025 will be a significant milestone in LoL esports history,
Riot has expressed plans to expand to multiple countries in 2025. International markets have always clamored for more events in their regions. Despite the hype, Riot does face difficulties with catering to other regions. In 2024, Riot expressed its interest in bringing more League of Legends esports events to India in an exclusive Discord server announcement.
“We’re excited to be bringing League of Legends to the forefront in India. s a global phenomenon that’s all about passion, competition, and having a blast. We’ve seen firsthand how much India loves gaming, and we’re here to take that love to the next level,” said Arun Rajappa, Riot country manager for India and South Asia.
Working with local esports organizations is another key element of this expansion. The built-in community and regional expertise will prove invaluable in the company’s expansion efforts. The delegation of these tasks is likely baked into Riot’s goals. In light of these collaborations, Riot has also increased player freedom to participate in third-party esports events, to much fan rejoicing.
Esports made Riot a household name. Despite setbacks and controversies, the company aims to keep League of Legends as the premiere esports game.
