Riot Games published a dev update to preview what League of Legends will look like in 2026. And in short – ranked, items, roles, WASD, vision, objectives, swiftplay. Everything is changing. So, here are all the new out-of-game changes in the League of Legends 2026 season.
After nearly 4 years since Riot announced they were looking to rework Shyvana someday, it’s finally happening!
The first third of the 2026 season will be For Demacia! That means a Demacian-themed Rift, skins, pass… Most importantly though, Riot has teased that the Demacian half-dragon lady would get her long-awaited rework during it.
Unlike with Noxus last year, only some of the skins released during the first third of 2026 will be Demacia-themed.
Ranked will change in many ways, but probably the most noteworthy ones are changes to make autofill… possibly good?
In 2026:
Additionally, Aegis of Valor is introduced. When you’re filled, you receive the Aegis of Valor. This sigil will make you either earn double LP if you win, or get no LP loss if you lose – provided you finish with a score of C or higher.
On the other hand, if you play fill or priority roles (that receive an autofill protection), the Aegis of Valor will show up at the same rate on your regular games.

Champion select evolves a bit as well in 2026. First off, Riot is addressing dodging.
Next up, it will no longer be possible to ban a champion that a teammate is hovering. This was already being tested in some regions, and will now be deployed for good.
Alongside this, timers and animations in champ select will be 30 seconds shorter. This is another change that was already in effect in NA and Oceania for testing, so you shouldn’t see anything different if you play in these regions.
Another big change that Riot is enacting is recalibrating the rank distribution. The playerbase has drastically improved over the years, so bronze players of today are far better than they were a decade ago. Most notably, they’re much better than new players. As a result, beginners will now be placed lower to start their ranked climb.
On a smaller note, players with a higher MMR than their visible rank will now wear a “Climbing” crest on their profile in the loading screen. This is meant to show that they actually belong in their game, and that their visible rank just hasn’t caught up to their real level.
Continuing with rank mismatches, a person with a much higher rank in solo queue than in flex will start climbing faster in flex queue. This change aims at reducing skill gaps in flex. Note that it won’t work the other way around! Your solo queue progression can’t be influenced that way.
Lastly, duo queuing will be re-enabled for Challenger players.

On the polar opposite of ranked, Swiftplay also gets improvements. These will turn the game mode into something closer to ARAM in terms of, well, “swiftness”, all the while retaining the Summoner’s Rift experience.

The WASD control scheme is coming to League of Legends at last! Move with the keyboard, and attack with the mouse: LoL finally receives the same control scheme as most other games.
WASD actually just went live globally in non-draft queues. The new control scheme has received some updates since its debut on PBE. It is now set to launch on all queues whenever Riot deems it fully ready for it. That includes ensuring that it isn’t better or worse than the classic point-and-click.
This is far from over for all the 2026 changes to League of Legends! Read up on all of the gameplay changes for 2026 there.
