Joel “joel” Holmlund just got his team BC.Game Esports disqualified from a CS2 tournament as the player’s controversy resume grows even longer.
Counter-Strike 2, like many esports titles, is no stranger to cheating controversies. In May 2024, Valve banned over 26,000 players to curb the wave of cheaters who have infested the game. Valve has gone as far as to reintroduce its Overwatch feature to allow senior players more power to ban potential cheaters. Given Counter-Strike 2’s massive player count, it’s an uphill battle. Still, many fans are eager to call out the most notorious cheaters, especially at the highest levels of play.
Joel Holmlund of BC.Game Esports has a long history of controversy, and the recent incident shows he hasn’t changed at all.
CS2 player joel was caught by the Akros anti-cheat software during the CCT tournament, leading to disqualification.
While details on the nature of the cheats aren’t fully known, it was enough to trigger the anti-cheat software used during the CS2 tournament. Many fans pointed out that Akros anti-cheat is allegedly one of the worst anti-cheats, to highlight the extent of joel’s attempted cheating. Many fans expressed shock the player was even given a second chance. joel has a history of cheating and match-fixing. In September 2023, GODSENT, his former team, removed him from its roster. The ban was due to the Swedish player allegedly betting on his own CSGO matches from March 2023 to May 2023.
The ESIC also suspended the player for seven months after the allegations. However, the ban was eventually lifted after no conclusive evidence was found of these bets. As such, BC.Game Esports picked joel up for its CS2 squad, and he’s performed relatively well in 2024.
BC.Game Esports has released a statement on the incident via social media. The statement seemingly supports joel despite the ban and launched their own investigation into the matter. The alleged cheater has not commented on the ban as of this writing.
joel’s performances now have a huge asterisk attached to them. It’s unknown how long the player has used cheating software in matches or how many skilled players lost unfairly to a modified machine. Overall, the incident may make organizations think twice about grabbing joel for their CS2 rosters.
