League of Legends holds its spot as the most well-known MOBA in 2024, but does the player count match up to its reputation?
League of Legends is among the most prominent games in the world and has dominated the online gaming scene for the past decade. Many players flock to the multiplayer online battle arena to take on other players in various modes. The popularity of League of Legends is at an all-time high due to consistent updates from the developers. The League of Legends player count also saw a surge of new players impressed by the highly-rated Netflix show Arcane. With season 2 of the animated show arriving soon, the game is sure to see another spike in player count.
But vibes aside, just how many people are logging into Summoner’s Rift every day?
The League of Legends player count is estimated to be somewhere around 120 to 150 million active monthly players in 2024.
Riot Games doesn’t officially release player count data, so the numbers are sourced from third-party data collection services. According to playactive.io, the game averages around 140 million players each month.
League of Legends had humble beginnings in 2009 but soon started to attract a healthy player base. In 2011, it had 15 million active monthly users growing exponentially to 100 million in 2016. The title saw a couple of dips along the way, namely in 2017 and 2018, but has since recovered. The game reportedly hit 152 million users in 2022, the highest player count it has seen.
The League of Legends daily player count hovers between 25-35 million players across all available regions combined.
While monthly users are an excellent way to gauge a game’s popularity, daily user engagement is also an important metric. A game is truly successful if there’s a large number of players logging in daily to enjoy it. League of Legends reportedly hit a high of 35 million users in a single day in March 2024.
China remains one of the biggest League of Legends regions in terms of size and active players. The game is massively popular among Chinese gamers, and Riot has set up a super server to cater to them. Europe West, South Korea, and North America trail China in terms of League’s popularity.
