Is it possible to play CS2 on Xbox X and PS5?

Counter-Strike 2 is one of the biggest PC games in 2024, and console players can’t help but feel left out. Can you play CS2 on Xbox X or PS5?

CS2 is a 5v5 shooter based strictly on shooting mechanics and a set number of utility items available for every player. These dynamics are tough to succeed on consoles and other devices, but when Valve released CS2 in 2023, there were plenty of rumors about the game coming to consoles. This was fueled by Riot’s confirmation that their rival shooter, Valorant, would be playable on PS5, leaving CS2 fans wanting the same.

One year later, fans still wonder if it’s possible to play CS2 on consoles, specifically new-age consoles like PS5 or Xbox X.

Can you play CS2 on console?

It’s not possible to play CS2 on Xbox, PS5, or any other console. PS3 and Xbox 360 owners, however, can play CSGO on their older hardware.

CSGO is still available on older console models, but CS2 remains PC exclusive, and it may stay that way for a long time. This is due to the new Source 2 engine being limited to PC titles, as well as the competitive nature of CS2.

CS2 has an active esports scene, which is uber-competitive and fast-paced. Throwing console players into the mix would complicate the ecosystem, something that has already happened in Apex Legends. EA’s game is constantly in the news for controller players, who are finding exploits to pull off complicated movement tactics.

CS2 is also a movement-heavy game, which could pose challenges for players if it were playable on consoles—unless Valve decides to disable crossplay. However, CSGO on console is not a big hit either, which explains why the developer has decided to keep the new iteration PC exclusive.

Valorant’s success on PS5 and Xbox X may tempt Valve to dip toes into the world of consoles, but it’s extremely unlikely, considering CS2 on PC is still far from perfect.
