Is Aurora overpowered in League of Legends?

Aurora in League of Legends

Players are already calling for nerfs for the newest League of Legends champion Aurora, but is she as overpowered as fans say?

The Vastayan mage Aurora has quickly risen up the ranks of League of Legends champions mere weeks after her release. The Witch Between Worlds already raised eyebrows with her arsenal of unorthodox abilities. Her kit has made her a nightmare in the top and mid lane, especially against melee champions. However, League of Legends does have a history of overtuning champions in the initial weeks of release. After all, Riot doesn’t want the first impression of a champion to be “weak.”

Some fans believe Riot may have overtuned a bit too much this time, but do facts back up these sentiments?

Is Aurora overpowered in League of Legends?

Riot considers Aurora “overpowered” and even nerfed her abilities in patch 14.15, but she still has a high winrate in the top and mid lane.  In patch 14.15, Riot acknowledged Aurora was a “bit overpowered,” especially in higher-level play. In response, the developers tuned some of her elite-skewed strengths, alongside some quality-of-life changes.

However, the nerfs did little to stem Aurora’s win rate.  According to multiple League of Legends tracking sites such as u.gg, Lolaytics, and OP.gg, Aurora boasts an average of 53% to 54% win rate in the top and mid lane. This puts Aurora among the top champions for both roles. As more high-level players master her playstyle, Aurora’s win rate will only continue to rise.

As for why she’s seemingly overpowered, many players point out her invisibility and mobility. These qualities mean Aurora can jump in, harass players, and hop out with ease. Melee champions in particular struggle against Aurora, as they have no way of locking her down.

Many players are already calling her “cancerous” and calling for nerfs on her abilities. The impact of her ultimate has drawn the most attention on social media sites like Twitter and Reddit. Riot knows Aurora has overpowered abilities, but the recent patch did not commit to nerfing her significantly. If Aurora’s winrate continues to rise, Riot may release a hotfix to get Aurora under control.

In the meantime, players should learn the best matchups against Aurora in League of Legends to keep their rankings safe.
