Apex Legends is looking at one its lowest player counts in years, and gamers are blaming Season 22 for the fan base dying out.
Numbers for Apex Legends’ player count on Steam Charts have started trending after gamers noticed how incredibly low it had become. According to Steam Charts, the battle royale has dropped to well under 100,000 average players in the last 30 days. This makes October the lowest Apex Legends player count since 2021. The peak player count, however, is at nearly 250,000. This has kept Apex Legends in Steam’s top charts. So is Apex Legends dying? Probably not, as it’s still a popular game.
However, players are speculating that the peak player count is when gamers dropped in for the launch of Season 22 but most left after being disappointed with the latest season.
Apex Legends Season 22’s low player count can be attributed to an underwhelming map release and persistent technical issues.
Apex Legends Season 22 had a lot of players hype pre-launch, with leaked images of E-District showing a map unlike any other. However, when the season dropped in August of 2024, players were highly disappointed.
The first issue was that E-District didn’t live up to the hype. While it looked incredibly dynamic, with its verticality and neon cityscape, Apex Legends players quickly noted that it felt empty. The biggest issue? There was initially a noticeable lack of loot. This was later addressed in a follow-up patch, but gamers still felt E-District wasn’t as fun as other maps.
Players were also not a fan of trios revival, a new game mode that replaced casual and pushed duos, solos, and quads into LTMs. The ability to revive teammates faster has not been a hit, with many complaining that it feels more like team deathmatch since gamers fight the same teams over and over. Others noted that the revival aspect has made teams feel more disjointed, with players acting like solo competitors.
The biggest source of complaints, however, is Season 22’s increase in server and bug issues. The addition of the health bar has also angered a lot of players, causing some Apex Legends fans to point out how it interferes with some legends’ abilities. The dual weapons have also been a source of contention, with some feeling quite overpowered. To some, Season 22 has just felt like a mess.
It’s safe to say that Apex Legends Season 22 isn’t a fan favorite, but it’s not spelling the death of the game. While there are issues and continued resentment over battle pass updates, Apex Legends is far from dying when compared to games like Concord and XDefiant. Still, fans are hoping that Season 23 will bring some much-needed updates and fresh content.
