“I love seeing their flesh gundams,” An interview with Matara Kan

Matara Kan Jaxon interview header

Between spearheading the vtuber industry and signing landmark deals, streaming sensation Matara Kan graciously sat down for an interview with Jaxon.

Matara Kan’s entry in Vshojo has been nothing short of explosive, pulling in more than 2,000 viewers per stream and amassing a following that exceeds 500,000 across all of her socials. She is also a trailblazer in the vtuber industry. Matara was also the first vtuber signed by WME, a huge talent agency that has A-list artists as members. This signing is a significant moment in the vtuber industry as it’s the first time a huge agency like WME has recognized the medium.

Now, Matara Kan was kind enough to grace Jaxon with an interview. In this piece, she talks about the jobs she did before she was a vtuber, her favorite cartoon, and her tips for newer vtubers in the scene.

The Mother of the Momos, an interview with Matara Kan

Did you always want to be a sexy bug?

Yes. Ever since I was a little larvae, I dreamed of becoming a gigantic sexy bug woman who devours her husbands and plays video games for a living.

What’s the biggest change to your life upon joining VShojo?

Zentreya now has much easier access to kidnap me for any and all collaborations. :)

As a vtuber, do you sometimes feel like you’re limited with what kind of content you can do?

Yes and no. I believe vtubing is an incredibly versatile medium, one that allows for great theatrics and creativity! Also with how rapidly technology is advancing (think 3D suits becoming more affordable for the average VTuber + mocap software,) the limits of what is possible are expanding every day.

Since you’ve also already revealed yourself on stream at times, do you also have thoughts about doing IRL streams like kson or K9Kuro?

Revealed myself on stream, oh darling. What a way with words you have, buy me dinner first! I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. :)

What do you think about the current trend of vtubers revealing their faces and doing more streams as themselves?

I think it’s great and I love seeing their flesh gundams! It’s also really exciting to see a different side of content creation in this way and it allows for new content for the audience! Everyone wins.

In a previous interview, you mentioned that you didn’t like reading anymore due to the kinds of books you’ve found yourself reading as you got older. Have you regained your love for reading? If so, what are you reading right now?

I mentioned how I had lost my love of reading because I was only ever reading about self-help, self-development, and business. Thus, reading started to feel like work/a chore. But I have started reading young adult novels again such as His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, etc. Currently, I am reading Horus Rising.

P.S. Erebus is a jerk and I don’t like that guy.

Since we’re already in the conversation of hobbies, is there a hobby that you haven’t discussed with your audience yet? Something you’ve been enjoying recently?

I’ve recently gotten into cooking my food, instead of eating it while it’s alive and screaming. You’d be surprised how much a pinch of salt can do.

In a conversation with Kuro, you mentioned that you took a lot of side jobs to stay afloat and be able to stream. One of the things you mentioned is games journalism, can you elaborate more on that? What did you do in particular?

That’s a great question! In another life, my flesh woman enjoyed writing articles and talking about games with her audience. Unfortunately, as it was a while ago, details begin to blur together, but just know it was not too dissimilar to what ya’ll are doing here at Jaxon!

Speaking of jobs and gigs, what was the most unique job or gig you’ve taken?

Commentating a poker tournament, standing still at an art gallery opening with cheese and fruit pinned on me for people to take and eat, and, of course, being the one and only Matara Kan of VShojo!

How has streaming evolved since you started creating content?

Twitch has been Twitch for 13 years. I’ve been here for 12. I’ve seen it grow from a tiny little bug into the beautiful multi-legged monster that it is today. We would need a whole other interview to discuss how much content creation has changed in over a decade.

As a veteran of streaming, do you have any advice for small vtubers or streamers wanting to make a name for themselves?

Start now, experiment loads. You might “fail” a lot at first, but this failure is great. This failure is the most important part of the whole process. You get to learn what works, and what doesn’t. What needs refining and where. There’s no specific formula for success, as we are all individuals, something different will work for someone at a different stage in their career and it’s all about learning what that is. And of course, trial and error! Keep learning, keep trying, keep growing, keep experimenting, and keep creating!

Matara Kan

Can you finally say that you’ve created the little community you’ve been longing for since you joined VShojo?

Yes! :) The momos are lovely and they are anything but little. :)

What’s your specialty dish?

Raw momo with a wasabi and a dash of soy sauce.

What’s your least favorite household chore?

All of them.

If you were a worm, do you think your fans would still love you?

They would adore me and worship me, potentially even more… Can somebody write that down?

Was there a certain cartoon or anime you watched a lot as a kid?

I really enjoyed Mickey Mouse back in my younger days!

What would you do if you found out you’re suddenly invisible?

I would become a faceless streamer.

A genie suddenly pops up in front of you, you only get one wish. What would it be?

To have more genies to grant me more wishes!

A very special thanks to Matara Kan and VShojo for the exclusive interview with Jaxon.
