For League of Legends players encountering the annoying “Unexpected Login Error” in LoL, here’s the info you need on what’s causing it and how to solve it.

The “Unexpected Login Error” message usually appears as fans are trying to update their League of Legends client, downloading a patch or a hot-fix. Similar login issues can be Windows’ fault on the operating system level, but fixing this one is going to involve some more base solutions and a bit of wireless router maintenance. Here’s the context around what’s almost certainly causing your error, and how to resolve it.

What causes the Unexpected Login Error message in LoL?

The “Unexpected Login Error” bug is typically caused because of a poor internet connection. Unlike the “An Unexpected Error with Login Session” error that also frustrated players, this one is usually entirely fixable by the player.

The bug is often caused by an issue with the player’s ISP or with the computer itself. But not to worry. Here’s how to solve this issue.

How to solve the Unexpected Login Error problem in League of Legends

  1. Go to your wireless router and find the reset button. This is often a small, indented button that will be marked as “RESET” or with some similar verbiage. This will often require a small pointed object like a pen or paper clip to be used in order to press the button in. Push the button, wait for the lights on the router to cycle to indicate that the reset process is successful, and allow your internet restart as the router resets.
  2. Relaunch your League of Legends client and try to log in again. Make sure the client is fully closed prior to the reset, and restart it after your internet connection has been fully reestablished and confirmed as being online.

If this doesn’t fix it, it’s likely an issue with the DNS server you’re using. DNS stands for Domain Name System, and is essentially representative of the channel that your router uses to communicate with the internet. Here’s how to swap your DNS server easily via Windows.

  1. Open Settings, click Network & Internet, then choose Change Adapter Settings.
  2. Select the connection being used, right-click on it and select Properties, then select IPV4, and then choose Properties again.
  3. Select the Use The Following DNS Server Address option.
  4. Restart your computer, reboot your League of Legends client cleanly, and then try to log in again.

If none of these solutions work for you and the PC still experiencing other internet issues, it’s likely the fault of your Internet Service Provider. If neither solution has helped, it’s best to either contact your ISP directly to ask about these connection issues, or if the issues are strictly temporary, to just wait for your internet connection to stabilize again. If it’s still not working after a prolonged period and none of these issues seem to be at fault, you can as a last resort try to contact Riot Games Support directly.

That’s everything fans need to know to fix the LoL bug “Unexpected Login Error,” and hopefully it provides the resolution that you need.
