EA has opened up its money books from Q2 2025, and it was all looking pretty good except Apex Legends.
Apex Legends’ player base has been declining in recent months, with many gamers wondering if the battle royale is dying in 2024. Recent seasons have been catching flak from players, especially battle pass changes Respawn Entertainment had to partially backtrack due to immense outrage. Now, there are two battle passes per season, both of which cost Apex coins and have their own cosmetics to grind for.
In a recent fiscal quarter conference call, EA admitted that Apex Legends’ monetization changes didn’t go as planned.
Apex Legends earned less money in 2024 than in previous years, which totals to $3.4 billion in revenue.
As of May 2024, Apex Legends has earned EA $3.4 billion since it was released in 2019. It’s unclear how much the game has earned from May till now, but EA reported over $2 billion for the quarter including all its games. This includes Apex Legends, although it’s not clear how much was from the battle royale alone.
Apparently, it wasn’t as much as EA hoped. Said CEO Andrew Wilson: “Following changes to the battle pass construct, we did not see the lift in monetization we had expected. We will continue to focus on retention and breadth of content in service of our global community as we work towards more significant, innovative changes in the future.”
With Apex Legends being a black mark on EA’s otherwise impressive fiscal quarter, some wondered if there were plans to create an Apex Legends 2. Wilson shot this down, however.
The CEO admitted that creating a second version of a game has never seemed to go well for studios in the past, never being as successful as the first one. Wilson explained that the community would likely not respond well to a second version due to their investment in the first game.
“Any time we cause a global player community to have to choose between the investments they’ve made to date and future innovation creativity, that’s never a good place to put our community in,” said Wilson.
Instead, EA plans to “innovate” the existing Apex Legends. Wilson didn’t explain what these innovations would be, although he did mention that fans were already “seeing that from season to season” with the changes being made now. Of course, these changes have not been popular so far.
Apex Legends players made this clear online. Others ranted that instead of charging more for cosmetics, EA should have fixed ranked and found impactful ways to ban cheaters. Most replies to the underwhelming earnings were just claims that Respawn Entertainment has been “greedy” all along.
