Apex Legends remains a popular multiplayer game, but just how many people play it compared to its battle royale competition?
Respawn Entertainment carved out a niche in the growing hero shooter space with Apex Legends in 2019. Set in the same universe as Titanfall, the squad-based hero shooter exploded in popularity within a month of its release, with over 50 million players.
By April 2021, the game saw over 100 million players, among the most-played video games ever. Although Apex Legends has settled in number due to the surge of competitors, it still maintains an impressive number of players in 2024.
As of 2023, EA logged over 18 million active monthly players for Apex Legends across all platforms.
SteamCharts reports that Apex Legends has around 160,000 active players at any given time in June of 2024. The all-time peak of Apex Legends rests at over 624,000 players on Steam. Exact data on consoles are not easily found, but with hundreds of thousands of players on PC alone, console players would bump that number even further.
Regardless of how the exact numbers shake out, it’s clear that a ton of people still play Apex Legends in 2024. It’s particularly popular with competitive streamers, owing to the game’s deeper mechanics compared to other similar hero shooters. Still, it makes one wonder how many people Apex Legends compared to other popular games.
Apex Legends isn’t quite as popular as Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but it’s still a top battle royale.
Fortnite sits atop the battle royale mountain with well over a million monthly players years after its release. With Epic’s continuous releases and events, Fornite is unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon.
Meanwhile, PUBG continues to chug along at second place with a comfortable average of over 250,000 players monthly on Steam. Of course, Apex Legends is never far behind and can sometimes even dethrone PUBG on Steam during big events. Still, sitting in the top ten most-played multiplayer games in a cutthroat genre speaks volumes about how many people play Apex Legends in 2024. Still, if Respawn wants to keep that train going, it needs regular content updates and a thriving esports scene, both of which it has struggled with so far in 2024.
