Hololive has threatened legal action against stalkers, harassers, and other bad actors after multiple controversies for the Vtuber agency.
As vtubers reach mainstream popularity, it unfortunately encounters the problems common to celebrities. Hololive talents and fans alike shared multiple cases of harassment, stalking, defamation, and even impersonation. Incidents such as Momosuzu Nene’s robbery and the bomb threat under Korone’s name certainly paint a grim picture of streamer life. Thankfully, Hololive has improved its protection of talents from these malicious figures. After the stalking of former Hololive talent Yozora Mel and the high-profile harassment campaign of Kiryu Coco in 2020, Cover Corp has actively pursued legal action against these bad actors.
However, recent events have led to Cover Corp formally announcing new measures to protect its talents.
Cover Corp has announced its willingness to take legal action against stalkers targeting Hololive talents.
In a public announcement on the official website, Cover Corp promised to protect its talents from online harassment via new measures and legal protections. While the details of these protections are unknown, they should theoretically curb the worst of what the talents have to face. The statement specifically cited defamation, impersonation, and stalking as major issues the company is working to prevent in the future.
Cover Corp will regularly inform the public of these incidents through press statements but will not share specific details. The company reasons that sharing too many details publicly may hinder ongoing investigations. The vtuber agency also implored fans to report malicious activity directed at fans to Cover Corp or the appropriate authorities. Based on Cover Corp’s recent income statements that included 49 million yen in settlement fees, some of those legal protections may have begun to bear fruit. Fans hope the show of force from Cover Corp discourages future harassment.
Multiple vtubers outside of Hololive have also reported stalkers harassing them at conventions and during streams.
Nijisanji’s Scarle Yonaguni shared an unsettling stalker story with her fans, wherein a stalker followed her on a bike. Independent vtuber Camila also canceled a stream after an attempted break-in of her home. Unfortunately, these targeted attacks from stalkers won’t stop anytime soon, but the measures taken by Cover Corp should help give Hololive fans and talents some much-needed ease of mind.
