Dota 2’s Wandering Waters update has brought major map changes including new neutrals, overhauled lotus pools, and a new Roshan pit.
Dota 2 is an ever-changing beast but the expansion of the map was a radical change to the game. The changes didn’t end there, though. The Wandering Waters update expanded the river to the northern and southern reaches of the map and introduced other changes to go along with it.
Naturally, there were a slew of other major changes including a new neutral item system, character tweaks, and reworks aplenty. But what can players expect from the new Dota 2 map?
The Dota 2 river now extends to lakes that run between the top and bottom tier-one and tier-two towers. As part of that, some neutral camps have been submerged and will now spawn a new set of neutral creatures.
With Dota 2’s Wandering Waters update, the Pollywog, Boglet, and Croaker camp has been added. These creatures will spawn at specific camps and have a unique mechanic where they “evolve” as the game progresses. Initially they will be Pollywogs, which become Boglets in the mid-game, which finally become Croakers in the late-game.
The Roshan pit is no longer on the corner of the map, and is instead now in the river.
This is a bit of a homecoming for longtime Dota 2 fans. The Roshan pit was long a part of the river, something that unintentionally made the dire side of the map much more favorable due to the ancient neutral camp’s nearby placement.
More recently, there were two Roshan pits on the top left and bottom right corners of the map. Roshan moved between the pits at fixed intervals using nearby teleporters.
Now, the camps are near the right and left sides of the river. Instead of teleporting, Roshan will run back and forth between the camps based on the day-night cycle. As Roshan charges between the two camps, it knocks back any units that stand in its way.
Other parts of the Dota 2 map have been rearranged after Roshan’s relocation.
Tormentors are no longer team-specific. While they were previously something of a built-in comeback mechanic that could be farmed by teams forced to defend high ground, they are now more of a neutral objective.
There are now two possible spawn locations for Tormentors located where the Roshan pits used to be. Similar to Roshan, their location changes with the day-night cycle. Their location will always be the opposite of Roshan’s; when Roshan is on the right side of the map, Tormentors will be on the left, and vice versa.
Lotus pools have also been changed. Players now have to step into the pool in order to pick them up, and opponents can step into the pool to stop them from being gathered.
Wisdom Runes are no more, however. Taking their place are wisdom pools, which function much the same. Players can step into them to gather experience, but this takes time and it can be interrupted if opponents step into the pool.
