Twitch has apparently issued a warning to controversial streamer Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker.
Hasan has become one of the most controversial streamers on Twitch streaming sensitive and political content. The streamer is usually in the news for something he said or did on stream. Recently, Hasan has been in the spotlight because of his controversial remarks and accusations of antisemitism. A US congressman even wrote a congressional letter to Amazon and Twitch leadership demanding action to be taken against Hasan and platform CEO Dan Clancy.
While Twitch hasn’t take any real action against Hasan, other controversial streamers such as Frogan were banned. Twitch added a new “political and sensitive social issues” label to the platform to help advertisers avoid potentially controversial streams. Now, there is news that Twitch warn Hasan, but viewers question whether it was enough.
Hasan claimed that Twitch issued him a warning for showing a Houthi clip that violated the platform’s terms of service.
Hasan streamed with fellow Twitch streamer Mizkif, who asked Hasanabi to show him the “NMP clip.” The streamer quickly said no and stated that Twitch gave him a warning for showing the clip previously.
Hasanabi claims that the clip is shown everywhere and said that he thinks the warning is “stupid.” The streamer further claimed that Twitch’s standard for moderation is higher than on all other streaming platforms.
Some viewers feel this action by Twitch isn’t sufficient as they believe other, less popular streamers would’ve been banned for the offense. Some fans compared his actions to those of Asmongold, who was banned for anti-Palestine messaging.
These viewers feel that Twitch is too lenient with Hasan. Other personalities such as Ethan Klein have called out Hasan for his views and for allegedly normalizing extremism.
Twitch’s guidelines do explain that content promoting terrorism and violent extremism isn’t allowed. Despite that, Hasan seems to have avoided any real punishment in this instance.
