Still waiting for Half-Life 3? Tide yourself over with Half-Life Arena

Half-Life: Arena

We’ve been enraptured by the rumors that Half-Life 3 might finally be getting a release date this past month, but if you want to grab onto something more solid to wait for, Half-Life Arena and Half-Life: Element 64 might be right up your alley.

This pair of mods, created by developer Dark Vector, aim to recreate some of the classic action of Half-Life in a way we’ve not seen in years. Half-Life Arena is (unsurprisingly) an arena-style shooter mod for the original Half-Life that turns Black Mesa and beyond into a frenetic FPS battleground. Meanwhile, Half-Life: Element 64 is a whole new campaign inspired by the original game.

Dark Vector’s Half-Life mods are here to tide us over until Half-Life 3

Half-Life Arena, revealed on Nov. 28, and set to release on Dec. 12, 2025, is inspired by Half-Life deathmatch, particularly the Head-to-Head mode from the 2001 PS2 version of Half-Life.

For those too young to remember (or old enough to have forgotten), the early 2000s were filled with arena shooters, with Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena having been released in 1999. When their own PS2 adaptations were unveiled between 2000-2001, the arena shooter had its moment on consoles, and Half-Life’s PS2 adaptation’s Head-to-Head mode was likely inspired by that.

This in turn has led to Dark Vector creating Half-Life Arena, a mod so familiar, I swear I’d played it before (although, that’s certainly me misremembering Half-Life and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch). And at a perfect time: The recent free release of TimeSplitters Rewind has put plenty of old-school gamers in the mindset for Arena shooters.

Meanwhile, Dark Vector’s other upcoming mod, Half-Life: Element 64, also revealed on Nov. 28, captures the other important aspect of Half-Life’s legacy: Deep immersive story-telling. Element 64 is set in the world of Half-Life, but with a unique story inspired by shooters of the 90’s. Half-Life was the first game to feature scripted in-engine sequences to tell its story. And Element 64 could potentially build on that to make an engaging piece of 90’s nostalgia.

As mentioned Half-Life Arena is releasing on Dec. 12 on Steam, and will be free, although you’ll need a copy of Half-Life on Steam to play it. Similarly Half-Life: Element 64 is another free mod, but the release date is currently unknown. Again you’ll need the original Half-Life to play it.
