GTA 6 trailer reveals estimated release date, story details

The GTA 6 reveal trailer came ahead of schedule in an apparent leak on social media, with an estimated release date included.

In typical Rockstar Games fashion, the first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer lasted a minute and a half and showcased the basic premise and setting of the next GTA installment. The GTA 5 trailer was slightly shorter, coming at just one minute and twenty-five seconds. Red Dead Redemption 2, on the other hand, only got a one-minute reveal trailer.

The trailer didn’t spoil many details about the game but showed off Rockstar’s upgrades to the graphics and environment. It also teased some of the details on the story, seemingly confirming the Bonnie and Clyde main character duo that was previously reported on.

We now have a GTA 6 release date, kind of

GTA 6 will be released in 2025.  This is a bit later than expected, with previous leaks regarding the GTA 6 release date indicating a 2024 launch. It’s likely not too far off however, as Rockstar Games’ financial reporting indicated that it will arrive before April 1, 2025, when its next fiscal year begins.

The Grand Theft Auto series is the biggest and most profitable video game franchise in history, and the latest installment is shaping up to be a juggernaut. Previously, Rockstar Games stated that the company is excited to share details about the first trailer and looks forward to many more years of sharing these experiences.

The trailer didn’t seem to come out on the company’s terms however, as the trailer was seemingly leaked on social media in advance. Though it was quickly spotted and taken down by the company, that didn’t come fast enough to stop it from going viral. This forced Rockstar’s hand, and the company then posted the video officially.

GTA 6 has seen plenty of leaks in the past. In 2022, Rockstar saw a massive data breach leaking confidential in-development information about the game. The leak resulted in screenshots and footage from an early build of the game. More recently, gameplay footage emerged on TikTok, which got taken down fast. The footage appeared to show the trailer recorded by a smartphone.

With the apparent release of the official first GTA 6 trailer and its estimated release date, a decade of speculation, leaks, and rumors finally ended. Players will seemingly be visiting the sunny beaches of Vice City once again, the GTA universe’s take on Miami.

The trailer gave a sense of scale and showed how the GTA formula has evolved over the last decade. Players can expect to rob, steal, and create mayhem in the latest Grand Theft Auto; the basic pillars all seem to be here.

Whether GTA 6 lives up to drastic hype levels or fizzles out will become clear once the game releases in 2025.
