Good Old Games, more commonly known as GOG, has been acquired by CD PROJEKT and original GOG co-founder Michał Kiciński. The company had been a subsidiary of CD PROJEKT, but has now been acquired by Kiciński, separating it from the Polish video game development and publishing company.
The acquisition was announced on Dec. 29, by release with GOG posting on their homepage with details of the deal and what it meant for users.
As mentioned, GOG was originally co-founded by Kiciński while under the CD PROJEKT banner. While today known as the creators of the Witcher and Cyberpunk game series, CD PROJEKT was founded in 1994 as a way to bring legitimate sales of foreign games into Poland following the proliferation of piracy and bootlegging under the Polish People’s Republic.
Initially competing with fully localized versions and access to publishers like Interplay, CD PROJEKT started creating its own games in the early 2000s, splitting Good Old Games into its own subsidiary in 2008. One of the earliest digital platforms, GOG would continue to grow until its present state as one of the largest distributors in the world. Now GOG appears to be fully splitting from CD PROJEKT.
Despite the departure, the announcement stressed that this wasn’t the end of the values of independent gaming that GOG stands for:
“GOG will remain independent in its operations. We will continue building a platform that’s ethical, non-predatory, and made to last, while helping indie developers reach the world. We’re also committed to giving the community a stronger voice, with new initiatives planned for 2026.”
GOG, as part of its model, avoids the use of digital rights management software (DRM), and other elements that could make games unable to play after a publisher or developer decides in the future to make it unavailable. In this way, GOG promotes digital game ownership that still maintains the perks and boons of physical media.
The Q&A section of the announcement also stressed that nothing would change for existing users.
Recently, GOG launched its Patrons programme, an unique supporters programme that allowed members to help support game preservation.
