With the Swiss Stage done, the LoL Worlds Knockout stage kicks off Oct. 28 with GenG vs HLE. As a rematch of the LCK Summer finals, this match is HLE’s chance to pull a massive upset and get their revenge.
| Match | GenG vs Hanwha Life Esports – LoL Worlds 2025 Quarterfinals |
|---|---|
| Kick-off | October 28, 2025, at 12 am EST / 8 am CET |
| Top pick | GenG to win 3-1 |
| Betting favorite | GenG |
Both teams have looked very strong in the Swiss stage, comfortably going 3-1 with a loss to AL for both of them. But GenG has proven to have a much better consistency than HLE over the course of the year in the LCK. It’s hard to see HLE take it when GenG has proven to fare better so many times during the year.
The tournament favorites! While GenG being 3-1 is one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, their level has been up there. Below what we’ve come to expect from them, however. Like HLE, their loss to AL was nothing bad, they played amazingly in that game. But GenG wasn’t particularly good against T1, and made plenty of mistakes against TES. It was just nothing in comparison to the blunders their opponents made.

They’re still the favorites nonetheless, tough. Their strength comes from their macro, having superior map rotations, vision, and objective setups. They progressively reduce the number of good options that their opponents can go for, and either bleed them out or force them into bad teamfights. The early game isn’t their strong point, but they have the best mid to late game of any team.
A close second to GenG in Korea, HLE have lived up to their expectations so far. They’ve played great and controlled games, only having one loss to a top-shape AL. And in that loss, they played just as cleanly as AL did, only AL edged them out. HLE is solidly sat among the top 4 teams in quarters.

The whole question of this match-up is about form through the year against form at Worlds. At Worlds, HLE has simply looked just as fearsome as GenG. And they’ve managed fights excellently, an area that is supposed to be GenG’s core strength.
The problem is, GenG has also looked excellent, and this year in the LCK has proven that they have more fuel in the tank than HLE does. A peak shape HLE completely collapsed in the Bo5 against GenG before MSI, and did not recover for their ensuing match against T1 either. And while HLE is fully capable of showing up strong, the extraordinary part of GenG’s year is that they’ve shown up strong all the time.
HLE has also been making more individual mistakes than GenG has in this tournament. In their last victory against CFO, the LCP representative was able to steal several objectives despite HLE being controlling. Hanwha Life also mismanaged a few fights, even though they never amounted to letting their opponent get back in control of the game.
Hanwha Life Esports tends to live and die by Peanut’s performances on the day. He’s an incredibly smart jungler. He perfectly complements his laners and is the one to set them up for success. But he also has off days, and when he does, the team as a whole crumbles.
Those are all interrogations about the form of HLE, and we don’t have any for GenG. They will play well, they will be a monster. They won’t really show cracks in the early games, and they will punish the mistakes they spot and close the trap as the game goes on. So it’s hard to justify betting against them.
▶️ It’s worth noting that these two teams are for sure top three teams at Worlds. Perhaps top two, even. That one of them will not make it past quarters isn’t representative of its strength.
| Market | Odds |
|---|---|
| GenG to win | 1.22 |
| HLE to win | 4.12 |
| Over 4.5 maps | 2.85 |
| Under 4.5 maps | 1.4 |
Even though HLE has looked promising at Worlds so far, it’s very unlikely to be enough to match GenG’s prowess in a Best of 5. Their consistency also leaves to be desired, and the same cannot be said of their opponents. They’re likely to take one game over the series, but I really don’t see them win more than that. I also expect the nerves to kick in once they start falling behind – as has happened in every series between them since the beginning of the Spring split.
