A giant statue appeared in the Mojave Desert and everyone is hoping the reason is more interesting than Diablo DLC

On Nov. 29, Geoff Keighley, presenter, host and face of The Game Awards, posted three mysterious words: “regal.inspiring.thickness” alongside a picture of a mysterious structure.

If you’ve ever used the location app what3words, you’ll recognise that as a location indicator, and after a short investigation, intrepid gamers discovered a strange statue out in the desert. However, with its striking resemblance to the gates of Hell from Diablo, along with other familiar elements from the franchise, fans feel they’ve immediately cracked the code: New Diablo DLC revealed at The Game Awards.

But there’s a glimmer of hope that this isn’t just more Diablo and instead we’re getting something wholly different. Here’s what fans are hoping all the effort went into.

Everyone hoping Game Awards statue stunt is something more interesting than Diablo

As mentioned, using the what3words code that Geoff provided, gamers were able to travel into the Mojave Desert, in California, USA, to find the huge structure. And while the design, the aesthetic, and the nature of the stunt likely points to the announcement of a new DLC for Diablo IV, there’s hope it’s something else entirely.

Some have speculated that the location, the Mojave Desert, hints at something Fallout related. After all, Fallout: New Vegas is based in the Mojave Wasteland, a fictionalized version of the California location.

Beyond this, the ‘demons and people suffering’ aesthetic isn’t entirely unique. Some observers have posited DOOM, God of War, and even Elder Scrolls 6 as the true hint. DOOM has demons after all. And God of War is… about gods? Look, some of these theories aren’t great. Allegedly this is something to do with a God of War Egyptian game, but it’s hard to parse. We like the Elder Scrolls idea, as the huge statue bears some resemblance to an Oblivion gate Elder Scrolls IV.

But, we think unfortunately, we’ll have to apply Occam’s Razor here, in that the simplest explanation is often the most likely to be correct. It looks like a Diablo tease, quacks like a Diablo tease, and we’re expecting some new Diablo IV DLC, then that’s probably what we’re getting.

Still, we don’t have to wait long to find out. The Game Awards kick off on Dec. 11, and while our biggest hope is that we get a Half-Life 3 announcement, we’re at least mildly curious to find out if the Mojave Desert statue is a Diablo tease. Mainly so we can pat ourselves on the back for being right.
