European esports organization G2 Esports has overhauled its CS2 roster, bringing in new players like Álvaro “SunPayus” García and Matúš “MATYS” Šimko as well as a new head coach.
G2 started 2025 at a relative low point after the departure of Nikola “NiKo” Kovač at the end of 2024. The European team’s performance has dwindled, and the organization, which was in the top two VRS ranking positions at the beginning of the year’s first season, has since dropped to the 10th spot. G2 found a brighter note by earning second place at PGL Bucharest 2025, but hasn’t had any other significant success to speak of.
G2’s weak performance led to many fans speculating that the team’s roster needs revising to end its dry spell. The European team seems to agree with the sentiment as it has announced an overhaul of its CS2 roster. SunPayus will be joining G2 from Heroic, while MATYS joins from fnatic. The team’s coaching staff is also going through changes as G2 makes an effort to compete with rivals.
G2 announced in a tweet that the team’s new CS2 roster will see the addition of SunPayus, MATYS and Mikael “sheddaN” Mellström, with Eetu “sAw” Saha, joining as head coach.
Heroic had announced that SunPayus and sAw would be leaving the team after the BLAST Austin Major. G2’s announcement makes it official as SunPayus is joining the CS2 roster as the team’s new sniper, and sAw is signed as the squad’s head coach. sheddaN previously supported sAw at Heroic, and G2 has signed him to the new team as an assistant coach.
SunPayus played a vital role in Heroics’ success, and the player has an average rating of 6.8 in 2025. MATYS, on the other hand, has a slightly lower rating of 6.4, and fnatic’s performance also wasn’t as strong. But MATYS still proved himself despite his team’s lackluster results.
G2 is hunting for renewed success by revamping its roster, but time will tell whether these changes could prove beneficial.
G2’s new roster will be tested at IEM Cologne 2025, which will take place from July 23 to August 3. If the roster manages to become successful there, then G2 may have a chance at winning big with the tournament’s $1,250,000 prize pool. The team’s biggest victory would still be to return to the top five in the world rankings and show fans that its streak of failures has ended.
