Fortnite’s ICON Series has always included some interesting names that don’t necessarily fit in with the game itself. There are skins for Ninja, Bugha, Ali-A, SypherPK, and others that literally play the game. On the other hand, Bruno Mars, Neymar, LeBron James, MrBeast, Ice Spice, and Tyler, The Creator don’t have much to do with Fortnite.
Still, those skins feature known celebrities with large and often loyal followings, which is supposed to translate to good results for Fortnite. Patrick Mahomes and LeBron James are very popular with younger sports fans, and there’s a lot of connection between the target audience of LeBron and this game. But, in perhaps the most shocking move yet, Epic Games has added a celebrity to the game that seemingly makes no sense at all: Kim Kardashian.
It’s official: Kim Kardashian is going to be the next outfit in the ICON Series for Fortnite. In fact, Epic is hosting a tournament for players to earn the celebrity skin before it ever lands in the Item Shop. It stands to reason that this is the most shocking entry to the skin catalogue, perhaps ever. This is due to several reasons: firstly, Kardashian isn’t at her peak popularity right now, having been one of the most-talked-about people for the better half of the last decade. Secondly, fans of Kim Kardashian aren’t the first people that come to mind when talking about Fortnite.
Kardashian initially rose to fame due to her leaked explicit home video, which makes the inclusion even weirder. Fortnite has bridged into themes that aren’t strictly focused on young people before, such as working with Quentin Tarantino for his Kill Bill scene and adding Peter Griffin, Rick Sanchez, Bender, and Homer Simpson, among others, to the game. Be that as it may, adding Kim K still sounds a bit strange.
The other weird entry in the ICON Series, and the only one that’s similar to Kardashian here, is Khaby Lame, but he’s at least wildly famous on social media, especially TikTok. That social media site is highly popular with young people, so while Lame feels like a strange entry to Fortnite, at least gamers will have seen his content at some point.
Kardashian doesn’t have that. She’s now famous for her reality show and her critically panned foray into legitimate acting with All’s Fair, a legal drama with painful reviews. Neither one of those things fits the Fortnite target demographic, so it’s really unclear who this skin is aimed at. Nevertheless, gamers can win the skin for free or purchase it in the Fortnite shop soon.
