G2 Esports and Fnatic will kick off the LEC Spring 2025 playoffs upper-bracket semifinals. Considering both teams were near the top of the regular season standings, it promises to be one of the closest matches of the tournament.
The LEC pits some of the strongest European teams against each other to determine who’s the best. Karmine Corp and Fnatic led the bunch and placed first and second, respectively, though G2 Esports wasn’t too far behind as it finished fourth with a score of 5-4. Now, G2 and Fnatic must face off in the first match of the playoffs.
Unlike the regular season’s best-of-three format, the playoffs’ format is slated to exclusively feature best-of-five matches. As a reward for their strong performance, losing the match won’t result in elimination, but rather a second chance in the lower bracket quarterfinals where the losing team has another chance to win it all.
G2 has showcased strong skills against most teams in the LEC, even if it hasn’t always been enough to win outright. The team’s stand-out player is easily SkewMond, who continues to show up in every match. While Caps and Hans Sama have had their strong moments, they haven’t been nearly as consistent and have even disappointed G2 many times this year. BrokenBlade and Labrov haven’t performed too well, and can influence the course of the match against Fnatic by picking up.
Fnatic has been extremely impressive, even if the team experienced some unexpected losses along the way. Comfortably defeating teams like Karmine Corp and G2 Esports in the regular season, Fnatic’s 0-2 loss against SK Gaming shocked many fans. Two losses didn’t stop Fnatic from placing second in the LEC’s regular season and quickly becoming a favorite to win it all. The Fnatic players with the most potential are Humanoid and Razork, even if both have also showcased some of the poorest performances recently.
Fnatic’s support player Mikyx has played a huge role in the team’s recent success. Playing CC-intensive champions like Nautilus, he perfectly sets up plays for Upset in the laning phase and his other teammates during the rest of the game. The team is generally heavier on roaming the map compared to G2, which could be a major advantage and one strategy to shut down the G2’s potential jungling advantage.
Below are the rosters and roles for both teams:
Fnatic:
G2 Esports:
G2 Esports has a fairly limited and consistent champion pool it goes for when facing teams it considers strong. These picks include Gnar, Renekton, Dr. Mundo, Maokai, Akali, Hwei, Taliyah, Kai’Sa, Ashe, Varus, Rell, Nautilus, and Alistar.
Then there’s Fnatic. While Humanoid and Oscarinin tend to experiment with their champions, the other three have more reliable picks, including Pantheon, Varus, and Rakan. Humanoid tends to go for Yone and Taliyah a lot, but it’s as likely he’ll go for some other champions.
Fnatic lost twice in the regular season. The more recent loss was against KOI, though the team made a strong comeback after that to go on a winning streak.
G2 Esports started the regular season strong by winning three consecutive matches. Unfortunately, that winning streak was quickly broken and has given way to shakier recent results.
Fnatic and G2 Esports have faced off on the big stage 36 times before. G2 has an advantage against Fnatic with 23 wins under its belt, compared to the other team’s thirteen wins. It’s worth noting that Fnatic won the last time the two teams battled.
Despite G2’s many wins against Fnatic, it’s still the underdog going into the match with a betting line of 2.10. Fnatic’s line of 1.70 cements it as the favorite, likely thanks to the team’s excellent performance in the regular season.
Fnatic and G2 Esports have established themselves as two of the strongest European League of Legends teams, though Fnatic’s performance has been much better of late. G2 threw against multiple teams it should have won against, including BDS and GIANTX, and it’s also coming off a more recent loss.
G2 is the type to go in with guns blazing from the start, which may win the side the first game. With G2’s tendency to take unnecessary fights, Fnatic’s individual player skill will likely shine and give the team an advantage. Pair that with Fnatic’s unpredictable roaming perfectly countering G2’s more typical roaming patterns, and Fnatic may take this first match of the playoffs.
