Believe it or not, it’s been almost three decades since Final Fantasy Tactics set the standard for TTRPGs. First released in 1997 on the original PlayStation, the complex story of class warfare, betrayal, and revolution still holds up today. Combined with a deep job system, genre-defining grid-based combat, and visuals that still inspire other titles, it rightfully earned legendary status among fans of the genre.
Now, Square Enix is finally answering the prayers for TTRPG fans with release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles later this month. Beyond just a remaster and re-release, this is part preservation, part modernization, and a faithful recreation of a classic.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the newly remastered valice Chronicles stand out is its dual-title approach. Players can choose between the Classic Version or the Enhanced Version.
Classic Mode faithfully recreates the 1997 PlayStation original, complete with pixel visuals, tactical depth, plus the hugely popular modern translation from the PSP’s War of the Lions re-release. It is the game as fans remember it, albeit with a few quality of life changes.
Then there’s the Enhanced Mode. This version reimagines the Final Fantasy Tactics adventure with fully voiced dialogue, modern 3D visuals, a streamlined interface and a host of updates. For newcomers, a new Squire difficulty setting is also included, easing players into the punishing world of tactical RPG combat.

Square Enix has made it clear this is more than a visual upgrade to Final Fantasy Tactics. The game developers are adding depth and accessibility while keeping the heart of the original intact.
Highlights of new features include:
It is an approach that feels both respectful and careful, aiming to preserve the original spirit of the game while making it easier to play for a modern

At its core, The Ivalice Chronicles is the same gripping tale of power and betrayal. Players step into the role of Ramza Beoulve, a young noble caught between loyalty to his family and the harsh realities of war. Alongside him is Delita Heiral, whose rise from commoner to a greater station is so compelling, we’re sure he’ll become a favorite character of yours.
Themes of corruption, class disparity and the manipulation of faith remain as relevant in 2025 as they were in 1997, making this game feel less like a relic and more like a timeless epic.
In our opinion, Ivalice is one of the strongest settings in all of Final Fantasy. A cross-game location that’s shown up in almost a dozen titles by Square, Ivalice is one of the most interesting worlds that the Final Fantasy franchise has ever let us visit. And FFT: The Ivalice Chronicles will help us return once again.
When Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles arrives this fall, players can expect:
For some players, this will be their first chance to experience the game that inspired later hits such as Disgaea. For others, it will be a long-awaited return to one of Square Enix’s most unforgettable stories. But whether you are here for nostalgia or discovery, one thing is certain: the Lion War and the world of Ivalice is sure to capture hearts all over again.
